Sharks Pull Away Early, Top Eagles in Women’s Basketball
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Long Island Sharks used a dominant first quarter to establish an early lead and never looked back, defeating the American Eagles 69-55 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Wellness, Recreation & Athletic Center.
A sparse crowd of 146 watched as the Sharks improved their record to 4-1 on the young season, while the Eagles fell to 1-3.
Long Island set the tone from the opening tip, racing out to a 21-16 lead after the first period. The Sharks’ defense was disruptive early, forcing a series of American turnovers that led to easy transition opportunities. Janessa Williams and Kadidia Toure were instrumental in the opening surge, with Williams converting a steal into a layup and Toure scoring on a jump shot and a layup off American miscues.
The Eagles, led by the scoring of Molly Driscoll, managed to keep pace in the second quarter, matching Long Island’s 16 points. Driscoll, a guard from Allentown, Pennsylvania, hit a key three-pointer late in the half to keep the deficit manageable. However, the Sharks closed the quarter with a critical three-pointer from Laura Molnárová, assisted by Toure, to take a 37-32 lead into the break.
Any hopes of an American comeback were stifled in the third quarter as Long Island maintained its defensive pressure. The Sharks continued to score consistently, adding another 16 points to their total while holding American to 13. The Eagles struggled to find any sustained offensive rhythm against Long Island’s length and activity.
The fourth quarter saw the Sharks put the game firmly out of reach, extending their lead with a balanced attack. Williams, a guard from Lake Worth, Florida, delivered the final blow, sinking a three-pointer with under a minute to play to seal the victory for the home team.
Williams finished as the game’s leading scorer with 15 points, while also contributing an assist in 31 minutes of action. Her backcourt mate, Kionna Gaines of Columbus, Georgia, provided a significant spark off the bench with 11 points, many coming on aggressive drives to the basket and offensive putbacks.
The interior presence of Kadidia Toure was a major factor for Long Island. The 6-foot-3 center from Silver Spring, Maryland, recorded a stat line of 16 points, four assists and a block, showcasing her versatility and playmaking ability from the post. Molnárová, from Bratislava, Slovakia, added nine points in a supporting role.
For American, Molly Driscoll was the lone bright spot on offense, tallying a team-high 18 points to go with two assists in 37 minutes. Charlotte Tuhy of Madison, New Jersey, was the only other Eagle to reach double figures, scoring 10 points and adding a block. Point guard Anna Rescifina of Messina, Italy, facilitated the offense with four assists but was hampered by turnovers.
The loss marks American’s second straight defeat, following a 68-57 home loss to Delaware on Monday. The Eagles will look to get back on track quickly as they travel to face La Salle on Saturday.
Long Island, meanwhile, has now won two consecutive games since its lone loss to South Florida. The Sharks’ early-season success will be tested in their next outing, a road game against Fordham on Sunday, Nov. 30.
The game played out largely as projected by statistical models, which had favored Long Island to win with a probability of nearly 65 percent. The Sharks’ ability to control the game from the outset and withstand American’s pushes proved the difference in a contest where the Eagles could never quite close the gap.
