Fresno State women roll past Cal State Bakersfield for 2‑0 start
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — In a commanding wire-to-wire victory, the Fresno State women’s basketball team remained undefeated Friday night, dispatching Cal State Bakersfield 74-51 at the Icardo Center.
The Bulldogs, now 2-0, established their dominance early and never relented, improving to 2-0 on the young season. The Roadrunners, meanwhile, fell to 0-2.
Fresno State’s offense operated with efficiency and balance, building a 39-28 lead by halftime and extending it throughout the second half. The Bulldogs consistently outperformed the Roadrunners in each quarter, showcasing a methodical approach that stifled any hope of a home comeback.
The story of the game was the prolific performance of Fresno State’s Ashlyn Rean. The 6-foot-2 forward from Rangiora, New Zealand, was nearly unstoppable, pouring in a game-high 28 points while grabbing nine rebounds in just 33 minutes of action. Her scoring prowess from inside and mid-range provided the Bulldogs with a reliable offensive hub all evening.
Rean was complemented by a strong all-around effort from Hedda Koehne. The 6-foot-1 German native recorded a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, but her primary impact came as a facilitator, dishing out a team-high five assists. Jaisa Gamble of San Bruno also provided significant offensive punch, chipping in 14 points and four assists while logging a team-high 38 minutes.
For Cal State Bakersfield, the lone bright spot was the scoring of Chrishawn Coleman. The guard from Arlington, Virginia, shouldered the offensive load, finishing with 26 points. However, her efforts were not enough to counter the Bulldogs’ systematic attack. Tena Ikidi, a 6-foot-3 post player from Nigeria, contributed seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks for the Roadrunners.
Defensively, Fresno State was disruptive, converting Roadrunner mistakes into 15 points off turnovers while holding Bakersfield to just nine points in the same category. The Bulldogs also controlled the interior, scoring 42 points in the paint, narrowly edging the Roadrunners’ 40 in that area, but doing so with greater overall efficiency.
The game’s trajectory was set from the opening tip. After a competitive first few minutes, Fresno State used a series of runs to build a comfortable lead, a margin they would protect and expand for the remainder of the contest. The Bulldogs’ ball movement and shot selection proved superior, as they consistently found high-percentage looks against the Roadrunners’ defense.
The victory continues a strong start for Fresno State, which opened its season with an 87-38 rout of Fresno Pacific. Cal State Bakersfield was looking to rebound from a season-opening 66-42 loss to Utah Valley.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Fresno State entered the game as a heavy favorite with a 91.70 percent probability to win, a projection the Bulldogs fulfilled with their comprehensive performance.
Fresno State will look to continue its winning ways when it returns home to host Seattle on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Cal State Bakersfield also returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 11, facing Utah State at home.
The announced attendance at the Icardo Center was 233.
