Gonzaga Rallies Past North Dakota State in Women’s Basketball Opener

FARGO, N.D. (Interstat) — In a display of explosive offense and stifling defense, the Gonzaga Bulldogs opened their season with a convincing 81 to 66 victory over the North Dakota State Bison in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at Scheels Center.

Playing in front of a crowd of 1,906, the visiting Bulldogs used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Bison, who were playing their second game of the young season. The win, which came as no surprise to predictive models that gave Gonzaga a nearly 80 percent chance of victory, showcased the team’s balanced scoring attack and formidable presence in the paint.

The game began at a frantic offensive pace, with both teams trading baskets throughout the opening period. Gonzaga’s offense was firing on all cylinders, putting up 22 points in the first quarter. However, the Bison, fueled by the home crowd, kept the contest tight, answering with 19 points of their own. The high-scoring affair suggested a potential shootout was in the making.

That narrative shifted dramatically in the second quarter as Gonzaga’s defense clamped down. The Bulldogs held North Dakota State to a mere seven points in the period, turning a narrow three-point lead into a commanding 34 to 26 halftime advantage. The Bison struggled to find clean looks against a disciplined Gonzaga defense, a theme that would resurface after halftime.

Any hopes of a North Dakota State comeback were extinguished in the third quarter. The Bulldogs unleashed their most potent offensive stretch of the night, pouring in 26 points while once again locking down defensively. They limited the Bison to just 12 points in the quarter, effectively putting the game out of reach as they stretched their lead to 22 points heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw a spirited, albeit futile, rally from the home team. North Dakota State exploded for 28 points, their highest-scoring quarter of the game, but Gonzaga’s offense remained efficient, adding 21 points to their tally to comfortably secure the 15-point victory.

Gonzaga’s win was a testament to a deep and talented roster, with several players making significant contributions. Allie Turner led all scorers with 18 points in a team-high 31 minutes of action, providing a steadying hand for the Bulldogs throughout the contest. She also added three rebounds and two assists.

Providing a massive spark off the bench was Lauren Whittaker, the 6-foot-3 forward from Christchurch, New Zealand. In just 18 minutes of play, Whittaker was a force on both ends of the court, falling just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Her efficiency and interior presence were pivotal during Gonzaga’s game-changing runs.

Also coming up big from the reserve unit was Zeryhia Aokuso, who chipped in 14 points in 20 minutes of action. The backcourt was expertly managed by Ines Bettencourt of Sao Miguel, Portugal. The 5-foot-9 guard orchestrated the offense, finishing with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Another key reserve, Jaiden Haile, a hometown product from Fargo, made her presence felt with six rebounds in her 14 minutes on the floor.

For North Dakota State, which saw its record evened at one win and one loss, the standout performance came from Avery Koenen of Montevideo, Minnesota. Koenen shouldered the scoring load for the Bison, netting 17 points and pulling down seven rebounds in 26 minutes. Jocelyn Schiller, a guard from Grand Forks, North Dakota, was also a key contributor, logging a game-high 33 minutes and scoring 14 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Marisa Frost of Lino Lakes, Minnesota, rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Bison with 11 points and four assists.

The loss halted the early momentum North Dakota State had built after a 63 to 49 road victory over Northern Iowa this past Monday. The Bison will look to regroup when they return to Scheels Center to host Concordia-Moorhead on Monday.

For the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who begin the season 1-0, the schedule offers little respite. The team embarks on a challenging and immediate road trip, facing Toledo on Sunday. This marks the start of a demanding stretch that includes a home contest against Colorado State, a high-profile showdown with Stanford, and a neutral-site game against South Dakota State in Sioux Falls, all within the next two weeks. The Bulldogs will also face tough tests against Indiana and a Missouri State road trip before the end of the calendar year.

The victory in Fargo serves as a strong opening statement for a Gonzaga team with a difficult non-conference slate ahead, demonstrating the depth and defensive capability that will be crucial for their success as the season progresses.
