PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Grand Valley State Lakers delivered a dominant statement in their NCAA Division II women’s basketball playoff opener Tuesday night, overwhelming the Carson-Newman Eagles 96-48 at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

The game was effectively decided in the first quarter, as the top-seeded Lakers unleashed a blistering 32-8 run to start the contest. Grand Valley State, now 32-1, showcased its depth and defensive intensity from the opening tip, holding Carson-Newman to just eight points in the period while forcing numerous turnovers that fueled their transition offense.

Nicole Kamin, a 5-foot-11 junior from Escanaba, Michigan, set the tone early for the Lakers. She scored 16 points in just 22 minutes, adding two assists, two blocks and three steals. Her backcourt mate, Ava Scanlon of Grand Ledge, Michigan, matched her scoring output with 16 points of her own in only 15 minutes of play.

The Lakers’ offensive barrage was balanced and relentless. MacKenzie Bisballe of Lake City, Michigan, contributed 14 points, while Paige Vanstee added nine points and two assists. The Lakers’ ball movement was exemplary, led by Lexi Plitzuweit’s six assists.

Carson-Newman, which finished its season at 24-11, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the Lakers’ pressure. Emily Gonzalez led the Eagles with 11 points in 30 minutes, and Keeleigh Rogers added seven points. The Eagles were held to their lowest scoring output of the season, well below their season average.

The most pivotal segment of the game was undoubtedly the opening quarter. Grand Valley State won the opening tip and scored the first five points, prompting an early Carson-Newman timeout just over a minute into the game. The stoppage did nothing to slow the Lakers, who continued to execute at both ends. A three-pointer by Molly Anderson, followed by another from Avery Zeinstra and a driving layup from Kamin, stretched the lead to 13-2. Carson-Newman briefly interrupted the run with a three-pointer from Rogers, but the Lakers closed the quarter on a 19-5 run, including a late layup from Kamin to establish a 32-8 lead.

Grand Valley State maintained its commanding advantage throughout, leading 55-23 at halftime and 76-39 after three quarters. The Lakers’ bench contributed 41 points, underscoring the team’s formidable depth as they advanced in the postseason.

Carson-Newman’s season concludes with the loss. Grand Valley State moves on in the tournament, continuing its pursuit of a national championship.
