PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team, showcasing the form that has defined its dominant season, advanced in the NCAA Division II playoffs with an 81-59 victory over Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday afternoon at A.J. Palumbo Center.

The Mavericks, now 36-1, used a commanding second-quarter surge to seize control and never looked back, ending the Bulldogs’ season at 24-9.

The game was tightly contested through the opening period, with Minnesota-Duluth’s Lexi Karge trading baskets with Colorado Mesa’s interior force, Olivia Reed. The Bulldogs led briefly at 8-6 after a Karge jump shot, but the Mavericks closed the first quarter on a 16-11 run to lead 22-19.

The decisive turn came in the second quarter. Colorado Mesa’s defense stiffened, holding Minnesota-Duluth to just 10 points on a series of missed shots and turnovers. Offensively, the Mavericks exploded for 29 points. Reed was unstoppable near the basket, scoring repeatedly on layups and drawing fouls. The period was punctuated by a three-point play from Reed with 4:53 left, extending the lead to 37-26, and a Mason Rowland free throw just before halftime gave Colorado Mesa a 51-29 advantage at the break.

The 22-point halftime deficit proved insurmountable for Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs played the Mavericks evenly in the second half, with both teams scoring 30 points over the final two quarters, but they could never mount a serious threat to cut the lead to single digits.

Colorado Mesa’s victory was anchored by a significant advantage in paint scoring and free throw opportunities, capitalizing on its size and athleticism. The Mavericks’ ball movement and defensive pressure in the second quarter transformed a close game into a lopsided affair.

For Minnesota-Duluth, Lexi Karge led the way with 17 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Claire Bjorge added 16 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Myra Moorjani distributed six assists.

The most important part of the game was Colorado Mesa’s overwhelming second-quarter performance, where they outscored Minnesota-Duluth by 19 points. This stretch demonstrated the gulf between the teams on this afternoon, as the Mavericks’ combination of efficient offense and stifling defense turned a narrow lead into a commanding one from which the Bulldogs could not recover.

Colorado Mesa moves on in the postseason, its lone loss this season remaining a distant memory. Minnesota-Duluth’s season concludes after a playoff run that included a double-overtime victory in the previous round.
