Simpson’s overtime goal lifts Sirens past Sceptres 1‑0

TORONTO (Interstat) — Allyson Simpson scored 2:42 into overtime as the New York Sirens beat the Toronto Sceptres 1-0 on April 21 in a Professional Women’s Hockey League game at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Sarah Fillier and Casey O’Brien assisted on the winning goal. Kayle Osborne stopped all 20 shots she faced for New York, and Raygan Kirk made 32 saves for Toronto.

The Sirens improved to 12 wins and 17 losses. The Sceptres fell to 11 wins and 18 losses. New York won its second straight game against Toronto, following a victory in their previous meeting. Toronto had entered the game after a shutout win over Minnesota, while New York had lost its previous game at Ottawa. The overtime result gave New York the extra point in a tightly contested PWHL matchup.

Osborne was New York’s top star. She finished with 20 saves on 20 shots and earned the win. Toronto pressed for a breakthrough but could not solve Osborne. Kirk was busy throughout for the Sceptres and finished with 32 saves on 33 shots. New York held a 33-20 advantage in shots on goal.

Fillier had one assist, seven shots on goal and one hit for New York. O’Brien added one assist and three shots. Simpson scored on her only shot of the game. Kristin O’Neill registered one shot. Jaime Bourbonnais recorded four shots, and Paetyn Levis also had four shots to go with one hit. Maddi Wheeler contributed two shots, four penalty minutes and one hit.

Toronto’s Renata Fast led the Sceptres with four shots and one hit. The Sceptres generated chances through Fast and their forward group, but Osborne was steady in the crease. Kirk kept Toronto within reach with a strong performance of her own, turning aside 32 of New York’s 33 shots. The game remained scoreless through regulation.

The first period ended scoreless after the teams traded penalties. New York killed off Wheeler’s holding minor, while Toronto dealt with Shelton’s roughing and illegal body checking calls. The second period was quieter, with only Dalton’s hooking penalty interrupting the defensive struggle. Toronto pushed in the third, but Osborne denied each chance. Kirk matched her at the other end until Simpson’s overtime winner.

Penalties shaped the pace at times. New York’s Maddi Wheeler was called for holding at 12:04 of the first period. Toronto’s Ella Shelton received a roughing penalty at 12:48 of the first and an illegal body checking penalty at 16:54 of the first. Toronto’s Claire Dalton was whistled for hooking at 7:03 of the second period. In the third period, Toronto’s Natalie Spooner was called for slashing at 4:33, and Wheeler received a tripping penalty at 11:11. New York had four power-play opportunities, while Toronto had two. Neither team scored on the power play.

The winning play came early in the extra period. Fillier and O’Brien moved the puck to Simpson, who buried the chance at 2:42 of overtime. The goal ended a defensive battle and gave New York a road win. Toronto’s best push came in the third period, but the Sceptres could not find a breakthrough before overtime. New York’s defense limited Toronto to 20 shots, and Osborne handled every one.

The result continues a close season series between the teams. New York has now won consecutive meetings with Toronto. The Sirens will look to carry the overtime success into their next game, while the Sceptres will try to rebound. New York next visits Boston. Toronto next travels to Ottawa.

Interstat’s ELO system had projected Toronto with a 56.9 percent probability to win before the game. That projection did not hold, as New York secured the overtime victory and the extra point in the standings.
