Seattle Torrent edge Montreal Victoire as Murphy makes 37 saves
SEATTLE (Interstat) — Hannah Murphy made 37 saves and Julia Gosling scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as the Seattle Torrent beat the Montreal Victoire 2-1 in a Professional Women’s Hockey League game at Climate Pledge Arena.
Murphy, a 5-foot-10 goaltender from Kingston, Canada, stopped 37 of 38 shots for the win. Seattle improved to 3-3 this season, while Montreal dropped to 4-2. The Torrent erased a first-period deficit, took the lead early in the third and protected it through a tense final stretch. Montreal pulled its goaltender late for an extra attacker but could not produce the tying goal. Seattle had lost its previous game, while Montreal entered having won two straight.
Montreal opened the scoring late in the first period. Abby Roque scored at 18:57, with assists from Laura Stacey and Marie-Philip Poulin. The goal came after an early Seattle penalty to Aneta Tejralová for tripping at 2:54 and a Montreal hooking call on Maya Labad at 11:28. Roque, a 5-foot-7 left wing, finished with a goal, three shots, two penalty minutes and one hit. Stacey, a 5-foot-10 right wing, had an assist, six shots and two penalty minutes. Poulin, a 5-foot-7 center, added an assist, four shots and one hit. Shiann Darkangelo, a 5-foot-11 center, also generated offense for Montreal with five shots.
Seattle answered early in the second period. Alex Carpenter tied the game at 3:32, with Julia Gosling and Jessie Eldridge assisting. Carpenter, a 5-foot-7 center, recorded a goal on three shots. Gosling, a 5-foot-10 left wing, finished with a goal, an assist, four shots and a hit. Eldridge, a 5-foot-9 right wing, had an assist and one shot. The middle period also included a hooking penalty on Stacey at 9:12 and a roughing call on Seattle’s Megan Carter at 15:10. Montreal did not score again before the second intermission.
The Torrent took the lead for good in the third. Gosling scored at 3:23, assisted by Hilary Knight and Anna Wilgren. Wilgren, a 5-foot-8 left defenseman, added an assist and two shots. Seattle then protected the lead through penalties to Danielle Serdachny for high sticking at 7:57 and Carter for holding at 17:17. Montreal received a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Roque at 20:00. Seattle was whistled for four penalties, Montreal for three. Carter was called twice for Seattle, and Roque’s penalty came at the final horn. Cayla Barnes, a 5-foot-2 right defenseman, had two shots for Seattle, while Montreal’s Stacey, Roque and Poulin continued to press for an equalizer.
Seattle’s win was paced by Murphy’s 37 saves and goals from Carpenter and Gosling. Carpenter tied the game in the second period. Gosling scored the winner in the third, with Wilgren and Knight assisting. For Montreal, Roque’s first-period goal was the only offense. Stacey and Poulin each recorded assists, and Darkangelo had five shots. Barnes had two shots from the Seattle blue line, while Eldridge assisted on Carpenter’s goal.
Murphy was the top star for Seattle, turning aside 37 shots in a game in which Montreal generated pressure late. The Victoire’s best chances came in the third period, but Murphy held firm as the Torrent protected the one-goal advantage. Seattle held Montreal off the scoreboard in the closing minutes. Montreal’s final push included the late penalty and a scramble in front, but the Torrent kept the puck away from the net long enough to secure the win. Montreal finished with 38 shots on Murphy.
Interstat’s ELO system had projected Montreal with a 51.3 percent probability to win before the game. Seattle’s victory came against that projection.
