49ers ride Purdy’s three touchdown passes to opening win over Rams

MELBOURNE (Interstat) — Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes and San Francisco’s defense controlled the game as the 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne. The announced attendance was 100,021. San Francisco improved to 1-0. The Rams fell to 0-1. San Francisco was the visiting team, and the Rams were the home team. The NFL regular-season game was played in Australia, and San Francisco never trailed after the second quarter. Purdy guided an offense that scored on three passing plays and received two field goals from Eddy Pineiro. The 49ers defense held Los Angeles to one touchdown, turning an early deficit into a comfortable win. San Francisco’s victory came in the first game of its season and handed Los Angeles a loss in its opener.

San Francisco opened the scoring in the first quarter. With 6:15 remaining, Pineiro made a 20-yard field goal to give the 49ers a 3-0 lead. The drive stalled near the goal line, but San Francisco took the first lead of the game. Los Angeles answered early in the second quarter. With 14:57 remaining, Kyren Williams ran up the middle for 5 yards and a touchdown. Harrison Mevis made the extra point, giving the Rams a 7-3 advantage. It would be the only time Los Angeles reached the end zone. San Francisco’s defense settled in after that score and kept the Rams off the scoreboard for the rest of the night. The Rams managed little offense after their touchdown, and the 49ers began to take control on both sides of the ball.

The 49ers reclaimed the lead later in the second quarter. With 4:28 remaining, Purdy threw deep over the middle to Demarcus Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown. Pineiro added the extra point, putting San Francisco ahead 10-7. The strike capped a quick response and gave the 49ers momentum before halftime. San Francisco’s offense found room through the air, while the defense prevented Los Angeles from building on its early touchdown. At halftime, the 49ers led by three points. The passing game had produced the game’s biggest play to that point, and San Francisco carried the lead into the locker room.

San Francisco extended its lead in the third quarter. With 11:03 remaining, Purdy connected with Mike Evans on a short pass to the left for a 2-yard touchdown. Pineiro’s extra point made it 17-7. The scoring play capped a methodical drive and forced Los Angeles to play from behind. The Rams tried to answer, but San Francisco’s defense, led by a group that included Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, Dre Greenlaw and Deommodore Lenoir, kept pressure on Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles offense. The Rams could not find a rhythm after their opening touchdown. San Francisco’s front seven and secondary limited big plays and made the Rams work for every yard. The third-quarter score gave the 49ers a two-possession cushion.

The 49ers put the game away in the fourth quarter. With 12:57 remaining, Purdy threw short to the right to Deebo Samuel Sr., who turned the play into a 15-yard touchdown. Pineiro’s extra point gave San Francisco a 24-7 lead. Less than four minutes later, Pineiro made a 56-yard field goal with 9:43 remaining to push the margin to 27-7. The long kick capped the scoring and removed any realistic hope for a Los Angeles comeback. San Francisco’s defense closed out the game from there, finishing a dominant second half. The Rams never threatened again, and the 49ers ran out the final minutes with a comfortable advantage.
