Bills Stay Unbeaten With Late Push Past Chargers
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (Interstat) — Josh Allen ran for two touchdowns and James Cook III rushed for 154 yards and a score as the Buffalo Bills defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 24-16 on Sunday at Highmark Stadium. A crowd of 60,361 watched Buffalo improve to 3-0 while Los Angeles fell to 0-3. The Bills remained unbeaten behind a fourth-quarter surge, while the Chargers stayed winless after a close game into the second half.
The Chargers opened with a productive drive and took an early lead when Justin Herbert found Keaton Mitchell on a short middle pass for a 1-yard touchdown. Cameron Dicker added the extra point. Dicker later connected on a 31-yard field goal to give Los Angeles a 10-0 advantage after the first quarter. The Chargers had a chance to extend the lead in the second quarter, but Dicker’s 45-yard attempt was no good wide left.
Buffalo answered before halftime. Tyler Bass made a 28-yard field goal, and Allen powered in on a 1-yard run. Bass added the extra point, tying the game at 10-10. The Bills’ defense held Los Angeles in check for much of the second quarter, and the Chargers went into the break level despite Herbert’s efficient passing. Buffalo’s offense had struggled early, but Allen’s rushing score gave the Bills momentum before the break.
Los Angeles reclaimed the lead in the third quarter on Dicker’s 21-yard field goal. The Chargers led 13-10, but Buffalo’s offense found its footing in the fourth. An apparent 43-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Ty Johnson was nullified by a penalty, but Allen soon scored on another 1-yard run. Bass’ extra point put Buffalo ahead. Cook then broke through for a 3-yard touchdown, and Bass converted again to give the Bills a 24-13 cushion.
The Chargers added a late 33-yard field goal from Dicker after Herbert was sacked at the Buffalo 18 for a 3-yard loss. That trimmed the deficit to 24-16, but Los Angeles could not recover the ball or mount another scoring drive. Herbert finished 20 of 34 passing for 226 yards and one touchdown and ran four times for 17 yards.
