Buccaneers Edge Panthers on Late Field Goal
TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by critical red zone stands and a final, frantic sequence, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers edged the Carolina Panthers 16-14 on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium to close their seasons with identical records.
The victory, secured before 65,082 fans, gave both teams an 8-9 final mark, but it was the Buccaneers who executed in the decisive moments to avenge a loss to Carolina from two weeks prior.
Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield, the top star for the home side, orchestrated a methodical attack and avoided the turnovers that plagued Carolina. Mayfield completed 16 of 22 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown, adding 31 yards on four scrambles. His favorite target was tight end Cade Otton, who hauled in seven catches for 94 yards and the game’s opening score.
The Buccaneers set the tone early, marching 65 yards on the game’s first possession. Mayfield capped the drive with an 18-yard strike to Otton over the middle. Chase McLaughlin’s extra point gave Tampa Bay a 7-0 lead. After forcing a three-and-out, the Bucs added a 29-yard McLaughlin field goal to end their second drive, establishing a 10-0 advantage late in the first quarter.
Carolina, which managed just 20 total rushing yards, found its offense through the air. Quarterback Bryce Young responded from the early deficit, finishing 24 of 35 for 266 yards and two touchdowns. He led a 12-play, 80-yard drive in the second quarter, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tommy Tremble to cut the deficit to 10-7.
The Panthers had a chance to take the lead before halftime after linebacker Christian Rozeboom intercepted Mayfield and returned it to the Tampa Bay 19. But the Bucs’ defense stiffened, forcing a field goal attempt that Ryan Fitzgerald pushed wide right from 54 yards in the third quarter, preserving a tenuous lead.
Tampa Bay extended its lead to 16-7 early in the fourth quarter on McLaughlin’s third field goal, a 48-yarder. The most important part of the game, however, unfolded in the final minutes as Carolina mounted a desperate comeback.
Young engineered a brilliant 75-yard drive in just over two minutes, connecting with rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan for a 40-yard gain to the Tampa Bay 8. On the next play, Young found Jalen Coker for an 8-yard touchdown, pulling Carolina within 16-14 with 2:27 remaining.
The Panthers’ defense, needing a stop to get the ball back, could not contain Mayfield and the Bucs’ rushing attack on the ensuing possession. Facing third-and-7 from his own 35, Mayfield delivered the clinching play, hitting Otton for a 20-yard gain along the sideline to move the chains. Tampa Bay then successfully ran out the clock, with running back Bucky Irving carrying six times on the final drive to force Carolina to burn its remaining timeouts.
Irving finished with 85 yards on 26 carries, providing the grinding balance to Mayfield’s efficiency. The Bucs’ defense, led by safety Tykee Smith’s five tackles and a key interception by cornerback Jacob Parrish in the second quarter, held firm when needed.
Carolina’s final, chaotic play ended any hope. After a completion and lateral, McMillan fumbled and Tampa Bay’s Benjamin Morrison recovered as time expired.
McMillan was a bright spot for Carolina with four catches for 85 yards, while defensive tackle Derrick Brown recorded a remarkable 13 tackles from the interior. The loss encapsulated a season of narrow margins for the Panthers, who finish with a losing record despite a positive point differential in their recent matchups.
For Tampa Bay, the win provided a measure of consolation to end a .500 campaign, finishing with victories in three of their final five games. The result also ensured a season split with their NFC South rival, with each team winning on the other’s home field.
