Bears Upset Eagles With Strong Finish on Road
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a stunning upset that defied statistical projections and silenced a sold-out Lincoln Financial Field, the Chicago Bears relied on a punishing ground attack and timely defensive stands to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 24 to 15 on Friday night.
The victory, forged against a team given a 93 percent probability to win by one analytics system, improved the Bears’ record to 9-3, while the Eagles fell to 8-4.
The game was a tale of two contrasting offenses. Chicago, despite an uneven passing performance from quarterback Caleb Williams, dominated on the ground, amassing over 250 rushing yards. Rookie Kyle Monangai was the workhorse, grinding out 130 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, while former Eagle D’Andre Swift added 125 yards and a score against his old team, including a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that opened the scoring.
Philadelphia, conversely, moved the ball through the air with quarterback Jalen Hurts frequently targeting star receiver A.J. Brown, but struggled to finish drives in the end zone until the game’s final minutes. Brown was spectacular, hauling in 10 receptions for 132 yards and both of Philadelphia’s touchdowns.
The Bears set the tone early, embarking on a methodical, 13-play, 75-yard opening drive that consumed over half of the first quarter. The series was emblematic of their entire game plan, featuring eight running plays capped by Swift’s touchdown plunge to give Chicago a 7 to 0 lead.
Philadelphia responded in the second quarter with a 44-yard field goal from Jake Elliott to cut the deficit to 7 to 3. The Bears answered with a drive of their own, but it stalled in the red zone, forcing them to settle for a 30-yard Cairo Santos field goal, making the score 10 to 3, which held until halftime.
The Eagles emerged from the break with momentum. After a Kevin Byard III interception of Hurts gave Chicago a prime opportunity to extend its lead, the Bears’ offense faltered. On the ensuing possession, Hurts engineered a response, connecting with Brown on a deep 33-yard touchdown pass. However, Elliott’s extra point attempt sailed wide left, leaving the score at 10 to 9 and proving to be a critical missed point.
The missed PAT loomed larger as Chicago seized control in the fourth quarter. The Bears put together another marathon drive, this one spanning 14 plays and 79 yards, culminating in Monangai’s 4-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 17 to 9.
After forcing a Philadelphia punt, Chicago delivered the decisive blow. Williams, who finished 17 of 36 for 154 yards with a touchdown and an interception, found tight end Cole Kmet over the middle for a 28-yard scoring strike, extending the advantage to 24 to 9 with just over six minutes remaining.
The Eagles mounted a desperate comeback attempt. Hurts led a 15-play, 80-yard drive, again finding Brown for a 4-yard touchdown with 3:10 left. Needing a two-point conversion to pull within a touchdown, Hurts’ pass to Saquon Barkley fell incomplete, leaving the score at 24 to 15.
Philadelphia’s ensuing onside kick was recovered by Chicago’s Rome Odunze, allowing the Bears to drain the clock down to just over two minutes. The Eagles got the ball back one final time and drove into field goal range, but Elliott’s 52-yard attempt to make it a one-score game again hooked wide left with nine seconds remaining, sealing the Bears’ victory.
Defensively, the Bears were led by a busy secondary, with safeties Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard III each recording six tackles, with Byard adding a key interception. For Philadelphia, safety Reed Blankenship was everywhere, racking up a game-high 14 tackles, while linebacker Nakobe Dean contributed 12.
The Bears’ win, secured on the road against a formidable conference opponent, marks a significant statement as they head into the final stretch of the season. The Eagles, meanwhile, are left to ponder a second consecutive loss and a series of missed opportunities that proved costly against a disciplined Chicago team.
The Bears travel to face the Green Bay Packers next Sunday, while the Eagles head west for a Monday afternoon matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
