Indianapolis at Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Kansas City Chiefs to a 23-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at a sold-out GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

In a game defined by defensive stands and missed opportunities, the Chiefs overcame a sluggish offensive start and a late Colts rally to improve their season record to 6-5. The Colts, who had a chance to win in regulation, fell to 8-3.

Indianapolis struck first, capitalizing on an early turnover. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ pass intended for Rashee Rice was intercepted by defensive end Laiatu Latu at the Kansas City 6-yard line. Three plays later, Colts quarterback Daniel Jones connected with Michael Pittman Jr. on a 6-yard touchdown pass.

The Chiefs’ offense struggled to find the end zone in the first half, settling for three field goals from Butker. His 22-yard kick as time expired in the second quarter cut the Colts’ lead to 14-9 at halftime.

Indianapolis extended its lead with two Michael Badgley field goals in the third quarter, making the score 20-9. The Chiefs’ offense finally broke through early in the fourth quarter. A 2-yard touchdown run by Kareem Hunt, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass from Mahomes to Rice, brought Kansas City within three points.

After forcing a Colts punt, the Chiefs mounted a dramatic 15-play, 63-yard drive in the final minutes of regulation. The possession stalled at the Indianapolis 7-yard line, but Butker delivered under pressure, drilling a 25-yard field goal as time expired to send the game to overtime tied at 20.

The Colts received the ball first in the extra period but went three-and-out. Kansas City then engineered the game-winning drive, methodically moving 66 yards on 11 plays. The key play was a 31-yard completion from Mahomes to Xavier Worthy that moved the Chiefs into Colts territory. The drive was sustained by the running of Hunt, who carried the ball six times for 25 yards on the possession, setting up Butker’s game-winning kick.

Mahomes finished the game completing 27 of 43 passes for 300 yards and added 30 yards on four scrambles. His primary target was Rice, who caught seven passes for 120 yards. Hunt was the workhorse for the Kansas City ground game, carrying 23 times for 78 yards and a touchdown.

For the Colts, Jones was efficient, completing 18 of 30 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathan Taylor rushed for 55 yards on 14 carries. The Indianapolis defense was led by linebacker Germaine Pratt, who recorded a game-high 18 tackles.

The announced attendance was 73,611.

The Chiefs travel to face the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. The Colts return home to host the Houston Texans next Sunday.
