Chicago at Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Cairo Santos drilled a 48-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Chicago Bears to a 19-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium, avenging a season-opening loss to their NFC North rivals.
In a game defined by defensive stands and missed opportunities, the Bears built a 16-point lead only to watch the Vikings storm back with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to take the lead. A last-minute kick return set up the game-winning drive for Chicago, which improved to 7-3. Minnesota fell to 4-6.
The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting, a 27-24 Vikings win on Sept. 8. This time, defenses controlled the flow for three quarters. The Bears methodically built their lead on the ground and with the leg of Santos, while the Vikings’ offense sputtered repeatedly in the red zone.
Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams, from Washington, D.C., was efficient, completing 16 of 32 passes for 193 yards and adding 26 yards on four scrambles. His ability to extend plays and pick up key first downs with his legs kept several drives alive. The Bears’ offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 10 points, and added six more in the third on a pair of Santos field goals.
Minnesota’s offense, led by quarterback J.J. McCarthy of La Grange Park, Illinois, was stifled for the first three frames. McCarthy also completed 16 of 32 passes, for 150 yards and one touchdown, but was intercepted twice. The Vikings managed only a 31-yard Will Reichard field goal in the first half despite several promising drives.
The tide turned dramatically in the fourth quarter. After a Bears drive stalled, the Vikings finally cracked the end zone on a 16-yard touchdown run by Jordan Mason, cutting the deficit to 19-10. Following a missed 45-yard field goal by Santos, Minnesota’s offense mounted a frantic, 85-yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes. McCarthy capped it with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Addison, giving the Vikings a stunning 17-16 lead with just 50 seconds remaining.
The Bears’ special teams, however, delivered the final twist. Deonte Duvernay returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards to the Minnesota 40-yard line, setting up the game-winning sequence. Three runs by D’Andre Swift positioned the ball at the Minnesota 31, setting the stage for Santos’s clutch 48-yard kick as the clock hit zero.
The Vikings’ defense was led by a prolific tackling effort from linebacker Blake Cashman of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, who recorded 15 tackles. Safety Joshua Metellus added 10 tackles, while linebackers Andrew Van Ginkel and Eric Wilson each had seven. Van Ginkel also notched a sack.
For the Bears, linebacker Noah Sewell had a team-high 10 tackles, while linebacker Tremaine Edmunds finished with nine. Safety Kevin Byard III secured a critical first-half interception of McCarthy in the end zone to thwart a Vikings scoring threat.
The announced attendance was 66,952. The Bears next host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 23, while the Vikings travel to face the Green Bay Packers the same day.
