Detroit at Washington

LANDOVER, Md. (Interstat) — Jared Goff passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns, and Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 142 yards and two more scores as the Detroit Lions dominated the Washington Commanders 44-22 on Sunday at FedEx Field.

The Lions, improving to 6-3, scored on their first three possessions and never looked back, amassing 514 total yards of offense in a performance that was as efficient as it was explosive. The Commanders fell to 3-7 with the loss.

Goff was surgical, completing 25 of 33 passes and spreading the ball to eight different receivers. Jameson Williams was his primary deep threat, hauling in six passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught five passes for 58 yards and a score, while tight end Sam LaPorta added five receptions for 53 yards.

The Lions’ offense set the tone immediately, marching 65 yards on the game’s opening drive, capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Gibbs. After Washington responded with a 44-yard Matt Gay field goal, Detroit needed just six plays to go 65 yards again, with Goff finding St. Brown for a 9-yard score to take a 14-3 lead.

Gibbs extended the lead in the second quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run. A failed two-point conversion kept the score at 20-3. Washington answered with its first touchdown, a 1-yard plunge by Christopher Rodriguez, to cut the deficit to 20-10. The Lions added a 22-yard Jake Bates field goal as time expired in the half to lead 23-10 at the break.

Detroit picked up where it left off to start the third quarter, with Goff connecting with Williams on a 14-yard touchdown pass to cap another long drive. After Washington’s Marcus Mariota hit Deebo Samuel for a 4-yard touchdown, a failed two-point conversion left the score at 30-16. Bates added a 28-yard field goal to give the Lions a 33-16 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Gibbs put the game out of reach early in the final period, breaking free for a 44-yard touchdown run. The extra point was blocked, making the score 39-16. Washington scored its final touchdown on a 4-yard pass from Mariota to Ben Sinnott, but another failed two-point conversion left them trailing 39-22. Bates sealed the win with his third field goal of the day, a 48-yarder, for the final margin.

Mariota finished 16 of 22 for 213 yards and two touchdowns for Washington, adding 22 yards on five carries. Treylon Burks led Commanders receivers with three catches for 58 yards, while Zach Ertz caught four passes for 54 yards. The Washington defense was led by linebackers Bobby Wagner and Quan Martin, who each recorded nine tackles.

The Lions’ defense, while yielding 22 points, generated consistent pressure, with Brian Branch and Roy Lopez combining on a sack. Jack Campbell led the unit with nine tackles.

The Lions travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday. The Commanders will play the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, Spain, as part of the NFL’s international series.
