N.Y. Jets at Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a stunning fourth-quarter collapse, the Cincinnati Bengals surrendered a 14-point lead in the final period, falling 39-38 to the New York Jets on Sunday at Paycor Stadium.
The Jets, who entered the game with a single victory, erupted for 23 points in the fourth quarter to stun the home crowd of 65,526 and secure their second win of the season.
The game was decided in the final two minutes. With the Jets trailing 38-31, quarterback Justin Fields engineered a methodical drive, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown pass from running back Breece Hall to tight end Mason Taylor on a trick play with 1:54 remaining. Kicker Nick Folk’s extra point provided the decisive margin.
The Bengals had one last chance, but their final drive stalled near midfield. On fourth down, quarterback Joe Flacco’s pass intended for receiver Andrei Iosivas fell incomplete, sealing the improbable victory for New York.
The loss overshadowed a dominant performance for much of the game by Cincinnati, which led 24-13 at halftime and 31-24 heading into the final quarter. The Bengals’ ground game was particularly effective, with Samaje Perine rushing for 94 yards and a touchdown and Chase Brown adding 73 yards and two scores.
Flacco finished with 223 yards passing and two touchdowns, frequently targeting Ja’Marr Chase, who caught 12 passes for 91 yards. Tee Higgins added a 44-yard touchdown reception.
For the Jets, Fields was efficient, completing 21 of 32 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown while adding 31 yards on the ground. The star of the offense, however, was Hall, who gashed the Bengals’ defense for 133 rushing yards and two touchdowns, in addition to throwing the game-winning score.
The Jets’ defense was led by safety Malachi Moore with eight tackles, while linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. paced the Bengals with a game-high 12 tackles.
With the win, the Jets improved to 2-7, while the Bengals fell to 3-5. The result defied pregame projections, which heavily favored Cincinnati. The Jets next host the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 9, while the Bengals will host the Chicago Bears on Nov. 2.
