Yomiuri at Yakult
TOKYO (Interstat) — The Yomiuri Giants and Tokyo Yakult Swallows meet again Wednesday evening at Meiji Jingu Stadium, one night after the Swallows edged the Giants 5-4. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 87 degrees.
Yomiuri (42-37-2) holds a slim lead over Yakult (41-39-1) in the Central League standings. The Giants have dropped two of their last three, while the Swallows have won two of three.
Right-hander Iori Yamasaki is a player to watch for Yomiuri. In Tuesday’s loss, he allowed three earned runs on five hits over 5.2 innings with five strikeouts, and went 0 for 2 at the plate. He will look to rebound as the Giants try to even the series.
For Yakult, right-hander Taichi Yamano has been dominant in recent outings. He earned the win Tuesday, striking out nine over seven innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits. In his previous four starts — all against division opponents — he allowed a total of three earned runs over 25 innings, posting a 1.08 ERA with 23 strikeouts. He went 0 for 3 at the plate Tuesday and is hitless in his last 23 at-bats this season.
The teams have split their season series 5-5 through 10 games, but Yakult holds a 7-3 edge over the last 10 meetings. The Swallows have won four of the last five head-to-head matchups.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-2 Giants victory, giving Yomiuri a 51.2 percent win probability.
Both teams play again Thursday at Meiji Jingu Stadium to close the two-game set.
