Nevin’s two homers power Seibu past SoftBank 10‑2

TOKOROZAWA, Japan (Interstat) — Tyler Nevin went 4 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs to lead the Seibu Lions to a 10-2 victory over the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks on Monday evening at Seibu Dome.

The Lions pounded out 19 hits and scored in four different innings, while SoftBank managed only five hits and did not score until the sixth inning. The attendance was 27,566 and the game lasted 2 hours, 56 minutes.

Seibu struck quickly in the first inning. After two outs, Seiya Watanabe singled to shallow center and Nevin followed with a two-run home run to left field, tying the game at 2-2. The Lions then strung together four consecutive singles off SoftBank starter Jo-Hsi Hsu. An-Ko Lin singled, Taiga Hirasawa singled, Taiga Kojima singled to drive in a run and Kazunari Ishii singled to bring home another, giving Seibu a 4-2 lead. The inning ended when Natsuo Takizawa grounded out to second.

The Lions added two more runs in the second inning. Alexander Canario singled but was later caught stealing. With two outs, Nevin hit his second home run of the game, another two-run shot to left field, extending the lead to 6-2.

Seibu made it 7-2 in the third inning. Kojima singled, Ishii doubled and after a strikeout, Canario singled to shallow left to score Kojima.

The Hawks’ only scoring came in the top of the sixth inning. Kensuke Kondoh led off with a double down the left field line. After Taisei Makihara grounded out, Ryoya Kurihara hit a two-run home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 7-4. But that would be the extent of SoftBank’s offense.

Seibu answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Natsuo Takizawa and Alexander Canario walked to start the inning, and Manaya Nishikawa singled to load the bases. Watanabe grounded out to shortstop, pushing one run across. Nevin then singled to second, scoring another run. A double play ended the inning, but the Lions led 10-2.

The game was never in doubt after Seibu’s four-run first. The Lions’ pitching staff kept the Hawks off balance, starting with winning pitcher Shinya Sugai. Sugai allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out four over six innings, improving his record to 1-2. Taiga Ueda tossed two scoreless innings, surrendering one hit, and Shunsuke Sato closed with a perfect ninth.

Hsu took the loss, falling to 1-3. He was charged with seven runs on nine hits over three innings. Yusuke Itoh relieved and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing five hits. Yuki Tsumori added a scoreless inning.

Nevin’s performance was his third consecutive multi-hit game. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs on May 1 at Lotte, 2 for 4 on May 2 and 1 for 4 on May 3. For SoftBank, Kurihara went 1 for 2 with a walk and the two-run homer. Kondoh finished 2 for 3 with two doubles. Ishii had two hits and an RBI for Seibu, while Watanabe also collected two hits and an RBI.

SoftBank’s record dropped to 16 wins, 15 losses. Seibu improved to 16 wins, 16 losses and 1 tie. The two teams have faced each other six times previously this season. SoftBank won one of three games in early April at home, then Seibu took two of three in late April in Tokorozawa.

The Hawks return to Seibu Dome for a game Tuesday, May 5, starting a three-game series. SoftBank then hosts Chiba Lotte for three games beginning May 8. Seibu also hosts the Hawks again Tuesday before welcoming Tohoku Rakuten for a weekend series starting May 8.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Seibu 6, SoftBank 3. The ELO system gave SoftBank a 63.60 percent probability to win. Seibu was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of plus 1.5. The total runs of 12 went over the over/under line of 7.0.
