Yomiuri at Yokohama
YOKOHAMA, Japan (Interstat) — The Yomiuri Giants visit the Yokohama BayStars on Sunday evening at Yokohama Stadium, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. under cloudy skies and temperatures around 62 degrees.
The Giants (13-10) took the opener of this three-game series 7-2 on Saturday, powered by a strong start from Teppei Mataki, but the BayStars (11-11) evened the set with a 2-1, 11-inning victory Friday. Sunday’s matchup marks the final contest between the Central League rivals this weekend.
Yomiuri arrives playing solid baseball, having won four of its last five. The Giants’ offense showed life Saturday, with outfielder Kota Hirayama going 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI.
Mataki, a pitcher and occasional hitter, will be a player to watch for Yomiuri. In Saturday’s win, he threw 3.1 innings of two-hit relief, striking out three without allowing an earned run. He has been effective against Yokohama this season, posting a 0.00 ERA over 7.1 innings across three appearances, though he went 0-for-1 at the plate Saturday.
For the BayStars, reliever Hayate Nakagawa has been a consistent bright spot. He threw 2.1 scoreless innings in Saturday’s loss, allowing two hits and striking out one. Over his last four appearances against the Giants this month, Nakagawa has not allowed an earned run in 8.2 innings, though Yokohama lost each of those games.
Yokohama’s offense has struggled at times, scoring two or fewer runs in three of its last five games. The BayStars managed just two hits in Friday’s extra-inning win.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 victory for the home team, and its ELO system gives Yokohama a 54.3% probability of winning.
The series concludes a busy stretch for both clubs. Yomiuri next hosts Hiroshima on Tuesday for a three-game set, while Yokohama travels to Chunichi for a three-game series starting Tuesday.
