Yomiuri at Yakult

TOKYO (Interstat) — The Tokyo Yakult Swallows look to continue their strong start and secure a series win when they host the rival Yomiuri Giants in a Sunday evening matchup at Meiji Jingu Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time under cloudy skies with a temperature near 67 degrees Fahrenheit (19 Celsius).

The Central League-leading Swallows (13-5) have won three of the first four games in this five-game series, including a 4-3 victory in 10 innings on Saturday. The Giants (10-8) aim to salvage the series finale and gain ground in the standings.

A compelling pitching rematch is set, with both starters facing the same opponent for the second consecutive outing.

Yakult will send right-hander Yasunobu Okugawa to the mound. Okugawa earned the win Saturday, allowing three earned runs over seven innings with six strikeouts. He has been a key part of Yakult’s early success, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in three prior starts.

Yomiuri counters with right-hander Bryan Mata, who took a hard-luck loss in Saturday’s contest. Mata delivered a quality start, yielding just one earned run on four hits over six innings while striking out six. In two starts against Yakult this season, he has a 3.38 ERA but an 0-2 record, receiving minimal run support.

The series has been tightly contested, with four of the five meetings between the clubs this season decided by one or two runs. Yakult holds a 4-2 edge in those head-to-head matchups.

At the plate, Swallows shortstop Hideki Nagaoka, who went 4 for 5 with an RBI on Saturday, looks to stay hot. For Yomiuri, outfielder Shunsuke Sasaki, who homered in the last game, provides a power threat.

According to Interstat, the game is a virtual toss-up, with its ELO system giving Yomiuri a 50.30% probability to win. The same service’s game simulator projects a high-scoring affair, predicting a 6-5 Giants victory.

Following Sunday’s game, Yakult embarks on a six-game road trip to Hiroshima and Nagoya. Yomiuri returns home to Tokyo Dome to begin a series against the Chunichi Dragons on Tuesday.
