Giants, Swallows Set for Pivotal Clash at Jingu
TOKYO (Interstat) — The Central League-leading Tokyo Yakult Swallows (12-5) will look to rebound from a decisive loss when they host the rival Yomiuri Giants (10-7) in an evening game at Meiji Jingu Stadium on Saturday.
Forecasts call for cloudy skies and a first-pitch temperature of 61 degrees Fahrenheit for the latest chapter in a tight season series. The clubs have split their last four meetings, with Yomiuri claiming an 8-2 victory Friday night behind a dominant pitching performance.
Giants right-hander Forrest Whitley is a player to watch. In Friday’s win, he fired seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine. He also drove in a run at the plate. Over his last three appearances, however, he has been inconsistent, mixing that gem with outings where he allowed four and two earned runs.
For the Swallows, reliever Shota Maruyama provided a bright spot in the loss, striking out five over 2 1/3 perfect innings of relief. He will be a key bullpen arm as Yakult aims to protect its league position.
Despite Friday’s result, the Swallows hold a two-game lead over the Giants in the early standings. Yakult’s .706 winning percentage is the best in the Central League.
Projections for Saturday’s contest are split. The Interstat game simulator predicts a 6-5 Yakult victory, while the same outlet’s ELO rating system gives Yomiuri a slight edge with a 50.30% probability to win.
Following Saturday’s game, the teams will conclude their series Sunday before embarking on extended road trips. The Giants will host Chunichi next, while the Swallows travel to face Hiroshima.
