Takanashi Dominates as Swallows Blank Giants to Take Series

TOKYO (Interstat) — In a masterful display of pitching dominance, Hirotoshi Takanashi led the Tokyo Yakult Swallows to a 2-0 victory over the Yomiuri Giants on Sunday evening, securing a series win in a tightly contested Central League clash at a sold-out Tokyo Dome.

A crowd of 41,933 witnessed a stark contrast in offensive fortunes, with the Swallows (10-4) amassing 11 hits but struggling to convert them into runs, while the Giants (7-7) were held to a meager two hits by a relentless Yakult pitching staff. The game, which lasted 2 hours and 49 minutes, defied pregame projections that favored a high-scoring affair, with the combined two runs falling well under the over/under line of 5.5.

The most important part of the game was the sustained excellence of Yakult’s starting pitcher, Hirotoshi Takanashi. Facing a potent Yomiuri lineup, Takanashi delivered seven shutout innings, allowing only one hit—a seventh-inning single to Raito Nakayama—while walking none and striking out five. His command was impeccable, and he faced the minimum through six innings, with the lone hit erased by a double play. This performance stifled any Giants momentum and placed constant pressure on Yomiuri’s own starter, Haruto Inoue, to match zeroes.

Inoue (1-1) battled valiantly for the Giants, surrendering two runs on eight hits over six innings of work, striking out seven. However, the Swallows’ persistent pressure finally told in the third and fifth innings.

Yakult broke through in the third. Hideki Nagaoka and Domingo Santana led off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt by Yudai Koga moved both runners into scoring position, and Jose Osuna’s groundout to first base was deep enough to plate Nagaoka for a 1-0 lead.

The Swallows added a critical insurance run in the fifth. After a Santana walk and a double by Koga put runners at second and third with one out, Inoue nearly escaped. He got Osuna to fly out to second, but Yukihiro Iwata then chopped a two-out single over the mound to score Santana, doubling the lead to 2-0.

That margin felt immense the way Takanashi was pitching. The Giants’ only semblance of a threat against him came in the seventh after Nakayama’s single, but Takanashi promptly induced a groundout and a strikeout to end the inning and his stellar outing.

Yakult’s bullpen, which has been a strength this season, sealed the win with authority. Shohta Masui worked a scoreless eighth, striking out three despite allowing a hit and a walk. In the ninth, closer Jose Quijada was overpowering, striking out two in a perfect frame to earn his sixth save of the young season.

Offensively, the Swallows were led by Yoshihiro Akahane, who went 3 for 4 with a double, and catcher Yudai Koga, who added two hits, including a double. The team, however, left numerous runners on base, going 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

For the Giants, the offensive outage was comprehensive. Only Nakayama and pinch-hitter Riku Masuda recorded hits. The heart of the order, including imports Bobby Dalbec and Trey Cabbage, combined to go 0 for 8 with five strikeouts.

The victory gave Yakult a 2-1 series win after the teams split the first two games of the weekend set. It also marked a significant bounce-back for Takanashi (1-0), who in his previous start on April 5 against Chunichi allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings. This seven-inning gem lowered his ERA and provided much-needed stability to the rotation.

The loss dropped Yomiuri back to .500 as their offense, which had shown flashes earlier in the week, was completely neutralized. The Giants’ pitching staff beyond Inoue—Ryuji Kitaura, Ren Tawa and Kota Nakagawa—each contributed a scoreless inning of relief, but the damage had already been done.

Looking ahead, both teams have a day off before embarking on new series. The Swallows will return home to Jingu Stadium to begin a three-game set with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars on Tuesday, followed by a highly anticipated rematch with the Giants in a three-game weekend series starting Friday. Yomiuri, meanwhile, heads to Koshien Stadium for a three-game rivalry series against the Hanshin Tigers beginning Tuesday before traveling to face Yakult again.

Sunday’s game, a classic pitcher’s duel decided by timely hitting and defensive execution, underscored the competitive balance in the Central League early this season. For the Swallows, it was a statement win built on the arm of their top star, Hirotoshi Takanashi, who outdueled his counterpart and handed the Giants their first shutout loss of the series.
