Hayakawa Dominates as Rakuten Routs Orix
SENDAI, Japan (Interstat) — In a commanding performance that defied pregame projections, the Rakuten Golden Eagles erupted for 13 hits and routed the Orix Buffaloes 11-4 on Saturday afternoon at Kleenex Stadium Miyagi.
A crowd of 24,340 watched as the home team, installed as a 1.5-run underdog, dismantled the favored Buffaloes. The game’s outcome, which saw 15 total runs, sailed over the pregame over/under line of 5.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 6-3 Orix victory, giving the Buffaloes a 51.4 percent probability to win. Instead, Rakuten improved to 4-9 across all competitions this season, while Orix fell to 8-5.
The most important sequence of the game arrived in the bottom of the fifth inning, transforming a competitive contest into a decisive rout. Leading 5-0, Rakuten ignited a two-out rally that broke the game open. After a walk and a groundout, Daichi Suzuki also worked a walk, setting the stage for designated hitter Yuma Yasuda. On a pivotal 2-1 offering from Orix reliever Kazuma Satoh, Yasuda launched a three-run home run deep to left field, extending the lead to 8-0 and sending a surge through the home crowd.
The damage was not done. On the very next pitch, catcher Hikaru Ohta connected for a solo shot to left-center, capping a four-run outburst and pushing the advantage to 9-0. That back-to-back power display effectively sealed the victory, demoralizing an Orix squad that had managed just three hits to that point against Rakuten starter Takahisa Hayakawa.
Hayakawa was the story on the mound, earning the win to move to 1-0. He delivered seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out five. His performance provided stability as the Rakuten offense built its lead incrementally before the fifth-inning explosion.
Rakuten established control early, manufacturing a run in the first inning. Yuya Ogoh led off with a single, was bunted to second by Hiroto Kobukata, stole third and scored on a Fumiya Kurokawa groundout. They added two more in the third on consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles by Itsuki Murabayashi and Suzuki. Small ball extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth, as a sacrifice bunt by Daisuke Nakashima set up an RBI single from Ohta, followed by an RBI triple from Kobukata.
Orix, stifled by Hayakawa, finally broke through in the fifth. Bob Seymour and Keita Nakagawa led off with a single and double, respectively, putting runners on second and third with no outs. But Hayakawa limited the damage, inducing a double-play grounder that allowed one run to score, and then a groundout to escape further trouble.
The Buffaloes showed a flicker of life in the eighth inning against the Rakuten bullpen. Pinch-hitter Yusuke Mugitani, batting for Ryu Sugisawa, launched a two-run homer to left-center. Yuma Mune followed immediately with a solo shot to right, cutting the deficit to 9-4. The rally was short-lived, however.
Rakuten answered emphatically in the bottom of the eighth, reclaiming the momentum and their seven-run cushion. Ohta led off with a double, advanced on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by Ryosuke Tatsumi. A subsequent error allowed another run to cross, finalizing the score at 11-4.
Orix starter Allen Kuri took the loss, falling to 1-1. He was charged with five runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. The Buffaloes bullpen struggled, with Satoh surrendering the critical home runs to Yasuda and Ohta in the fifth.
For Rakuten, Ohta finished 3 for 4 with the home run, a double, and two RBIs. Yasuda’s three-run blast was his only hit but provided the game’s biggest swing. Tatsumi added two hits and an RBI.
The victory gives Rakuten a chance to win the series on Sunday after the teams played to a scoreless tie on Friday. Orix will look to salvage the final game before returning home to face the Saitama Seibu Lions. Rakuten will embark on a road trip to face the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks following Sunday’s series finale.
