Yakult at Hanshin
Preview: Swallows, Tigers Set for Pivotal Clash at Osaka Dome
OSAKA, Japan (Interstat) — The Hanshin Tigers will look to build on a decisive victory and continue their strong start when they host the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in a Central League matchup Wednesday evening at Osaka Dome.
The Tigers (7-3) overpowered the Swallows (7-2) 9-3 on Tuesday, handing Yakult just its second loss of the young season. The win evened the three-game series at one apiece, setting up a rubber match with early standings implications.
A marquee pitching rematch is on tap, with both teams turning to starters from the previous night’s contest in relief roles. Yakult will watch veteran right-hander Yasuhiro Ogawa, who took the loss Tuesday despite not allowing an earned run over 4 2/3 innings of relief. For the season, Ogawa has a 3.86 ERA across 9 1/3 innings in two appearances.
Hanshin will counter with right-hander Hiroto Saiki, who earned the win Tuesday after a dominant performance. Saiki struck out a staggering 16 Swallows batters over eight innings, surrendering just two earned runs on five hits. In two outings this season, he has a 1.93 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 14 innings.
Offensively, the Tigers were led Tuesday by third baseman Teruaki Sato, who went 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. Yakult’s bright spot was right fielder Kazuya Maruyama, who homered and drove in two runs.
Both clubs enter play among the league’s early leaders. The Swallows had won seven of eight before Tuesday’s defeat, including series wins over Yokohama, Hiroshima and Chunichi. The Tigers have won seven of their last ten, though they are coming off a 2-1 series loss to Hiroshima last weekend.
Projections for Wednesday’s contest are split. Interstat’s game simulator forecasts a high-scoring 8-5 victory for the Swallows. However, the same outlet’s ELO rating system gives Hanshin a 66.4% probability of winning.
Following Wednesday’s finale, the Swallows continue their road trip with a three-game series against the Yomiuri Giants in Tokyo. The Tigers will hit the road for a three-game set against the Chunichi Dragons in Nagoya starting Friday.
