Yomiuri at Hiroshima
HIROSHIMA, Japan (Interstat) — The Yomiuri Giants look to even their series and their record Wednesday night when they face the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in the second of a three-game set at Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for Wednesday evening under clear skies with temperatures around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius).
The Central League rivals enter the game with identical 5-5 records, though the Carp (5-4) hold a slight edge in winning percentage. Hiroshima took the series opener Tuesday night, 5-2, behind a strong start from Masato Morishita and a two-run homer from Minoru Ohmori.
The pitching rematch from that game highlights Wednesday’s contest. Yomiuri will send right-hander Forrest Whitley to the mound seeking redemption. Whitley (0-1, 4.50 ERA) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four earned runs over six innings. Hiroshima counters with its ace, Morishita (1-1, 3.46 ERA), who earned the win after holding the Giants to two runs over 6 1/3 innings.
Both teams have been inconsistent early in the Nippon Professional Baseball season. The Giants have alternated wins and losses over their last six games, while the Carp have won three of their last five.
According to Interstat’s projections, Yomiuri holds a slight edge. Their game simulator predicts a 4-3 Giants victory, and their ELO rating system gives Yomiuri a 54.40% probability to win.
Following Wednesday’s game, the series concludes Thursday in Hiroshima before both clubs embark on new series Friday. The Giants return home to host the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, while the Carp travel to face the Yokohama BayStars.
