Espinoza Dominates as Buffaloes Rout Marines
OSAKA, Japan (Interstat) — The Orix Buffaloes, fueled by a relentless offensive attack and a dominant start from Anderson Espinoza, routed the Chiba Lotte Marines 9-1 on Wednesday night at Osaka Dome, securing a series victory and sending the reeling Marines to their fifth loss in six games.
A crowd of 21,262 watched as the Buffaloes (6-5) battered Lotte pitching for 11 hits, scoring in four separate innings to turn an early lead into a laugher. The Marines (4-7), meanwhile, managed eight hits but repeatedly faltered with runners on base, stranding opportunities and hitting into three double plays. Their lone run came on a second-inning sacrifice fly by Gregory Polanco, who finished 2-for-3.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the bottom of the fifth inning, transforming a manageable 2-1 deficit for Lotte into a decisive Orix advantage. Facing Marines starter Andre Jackson, who had settled in after a rocky first, the Buffaloes ignited a rally that broke the game open. Kotaro Kurebayashi and Ryu Sugisawa led off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt from Tomoya Noguchi moved both runners into scoring position for Yuma Mune, who promptly laced a two-run double down the right-field line, stretching the Orix lead to 4-1. The Buffaloes added another run in the sixth on an RBI double from Sugisawa and then put the game completely out of reach with a three-run seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from designated hitter Bob Seymour.
Espinoza, the winning pitcher, was the cornerstone of the Buffaloes’ victory. He delivered seven strong innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out four and walking none. He efficiently navigated minor threats, benefitting from the double plays behind him, to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Orix bullpen, with scoreless innings from Seiryu Kotajima and Kaisei Toumatsu, sealed the win.
Jackson took the loss for Lotte, falling to 1-1 after surrendering five earned runs on eight hits over six innings of work. He struck out four but was ultimately undone by the Buffaloes’ persistent pressure. Reliever Naoya Masuda provided a bright spot for the Marines with a perfect inning of relief.
The game began with Orix striking immediately. Yuma Mune worked a leadoff walk in the first, stole second, and came home on an RBI single from Haruto Watanabe. Ryoma Nishikawa then doubled to left-center, scoring Watanabe to give the Buffaloes a 2-0 lead before many fans had settled into their seats.
Lotte answered in the top of the second. Neftali Soto and Ryusei Terachi singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. After a flyout, Polanco lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Soto to cut the deficit to 2-1. That, however, would be the pinnacle of the Marines’ offensive output for the evening. They put two runners on in the third and again in the eighth but failed to score, repeatedly stifled by Espinoza and the Orix defense.
The victory marks Orix’s second consecutive win over Lotte after taking the series opener 3-1 on Tuesday. The Buffaloes, who had struggled in a recent series against the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, have now won three of their last four. The Marines, conversely, continue to search for consistency, having been outscored 19-4 in the first two games of this series.
The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had forecast a much closer 4-3 Orix victory and gave the Buffaloes a 60.9% probability to win. The combined 10 runs easily surpassed the over/under line of 5.5.
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Thursday at Osaka Dome. The Marines will then travel to face the Saitama Seibu Lions for a three-game set beginning Friday, hoping to reverse their early-season fortunes. The Buffaloes, after the Thursday finale, embark on a road trip to face the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles starting Friday.
