Yakult at Hanshin
Preview: Swallows, Tigers Set for Central League Clash in Osaka
OSAKA, Japan (Interstat) — The hottest team in Nippon Professional Baseball visits one of its toughest venues Tuesday when the Tokyo Yakult Swallows face the Hanshin Tigers at Osaka Dome.
The first-place Swallows (7-1), riding a four-game winning streak, will test their league-best record against the second-place Tigers (6-3) in the opener of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for the evening.
Yakult’s early success has been built on strong pitching and timely hitting. They are coming off a 7-5 win over the Chunichi Dragons on Sunday, powered by Domingo Santana’s two-run homer.
The Tigers, meanwhile, look to rebound after a 2-1 road loss to the Hiroshima Toyo Carp on Sunday. Hanshin has won four of its last six games.
A compelling pitching matchup is on tap. Yakult will send right-hander Hirotoshi Takanashi to the mound. He has been stellar in two starts this season, allowing three earned runs over 11 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts. He earned the win in both outings, including a 5-3 victory at Yokohama on March 29.
He will be opposed by Hanshin’s Haruto Takahashi. The left-hander is coming off a complete-game, three-hit shutout of the Yomiuri Giants on March 28. In his last start, he took a hard-luck loss despite allowing just one run over six innings against Hiroshima.
Despite Yakult’s superior record, Hanshin has been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The over/under for the game is set at 5.0 runs. Projections are split: Interstat’s game simulator forecasts an 8-5 Yakult victory, while its ELO rating system gives Hanshin a 65.6% probability to win.
The series continues Wednesday and Thursday in Osaka before both clubs embark on road trips. Yakult heads to Tokyo to face the Yomiuri Giants, while Hanshin travels to Nagoya for a series against the Chunichi Dragons.
