Nippon-Ham at Rakuten
SENDAI, Japan (Interstat) — The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, riding a four-game winning streak, will look to continue their momentum against the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in a wet Pacific League clash Tuesday evening at Kleenex Stadium Miyagi.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time under a forecast of 52-degree temperatures and rain.
The Fighters (5-4) enter having swept a three-game series from the Orix Buffaloes, capped by an 8-2 victory Sunday. Starter Kohei Arihara was dominant in that win, allowing two runs over seven strong innings. He will take the mound again Tuesday, looking to build on that performance after a rough outing on March 29 where he surrendered five runs to the SoftBank Hawks.
Rakuten (4-4), coming off a 1-1, 12-inning tie with the Saitama Seibu Lions on Sunday, will counter with right-hander Sota Fujiwara. Fujiwara pitched well in his last start, giving up one run over five innings in that eventual loss to Seibu, but was tagged for eight hits and three runs in just three innings in his prior appearance against Orix.
Nippon-Ham’s offense has erupted during its streak, scoring 33 runs over the last four games. Catcher Yua Tamiya and right fielder Chusei Mannami, who both homered in Sunday’s win, will be key figures in the lineup.
The Golden Eagles have been inconsistent, alternating wins and losses over their past six games. Their bullpen, however, showed strength in the extra-inning tie with Seibu, with relievers Chiharu Tanaka and Chia-Hao Sung combining for two scoreless innings.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the Fighters are projected to win 5-3. The system gives Nippon-Ham a 57.8% probability of victory. Betting markets list the Fighters as a slight favorite with a spread of +1.5 and an over/under of 6.5 runs.
This game is the first of a three-game series between the clubs. They will meet again Wednesday and Thursday in Sendai before both teams embark on new series this weekend.
