Yokohama at Yomiuri
Giants, BayStars Open Series at Tokyo Dome
TOKYO (Interstat) — The Yomiuri Giants and Yokohama BayStars, Central League rivals separated by just 30 kilometers but currently by a wider gap in the standings, open a three-game series Friday night at Tokyo Dome.
The Giants (3-3) enter at .500 after dropping a 2-1 pitchers’ duel at Chunichi on Thursday. Yokohama (1-5) seeks to halt a skid after falling 4-3 at Hanshin, its fourth loss in five games.
A key matchup will feature Yomiuri right-hander Takahiro Norimoto, coming off a strong seven-inning effort (5 H, 2 ER, 5 K) in a hard-luck loss, against a BayStars lineup that has struggled for consistent offense. Yokohama will counter with reliever-turned-starter Tatsuya Hashimoto, who has been a bright spot with 3 scoreless innings of relief over two appearances this week, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
Yomiuri’s offense, which scored 11 runs in two games earlier this week, will test a Yokohama pitching staff that has a 4.67 team ERA. The BayStars’ most productive hitter recently has been third baseman Toshiro Miyazaki, who drove in two runs in Thursday’s loss.
According to Interstat, the Giants are narrow favorites with a 50.9% win probability. Their game simulator projects a 5-2 Yomiuri victory. The over/under is set at 5.5 runs, with Yomiuri installed as a 1.5-run favorite on the spread.
This series begins a crucial 10-game homestand for the Giants, who will later host the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. The BayStars continue a road trip before returning to Yokohama Stadium next Tuesday to face the Chunichi Dragons.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time under the dome’s big egg roof.
