Takahashi’s Complete-Game Shutout Lifts Hanshin Tigers Over Yomiuri Giants, 2‑0

TOKYO (Interstat) — In a classic pitchers’ duel that defied pregame projections, Hanshin Tigers left-hander Haruto Takahashi authored a masterful complete-game shutout, leading his team to a 2-0 victory over the Yomiuri Giants on Saturday evening at a sold-out Tokyo Dome.

A crowd of 42,193 watched as Takahashi outdueled a formidable effort from Yomiuri starter Spencer Howard, scattering just three hits over nine dominant innings while striking out six and walking one. The game, which lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes, was a stark contrast to the previous night’s 3-1 Giants win and confounded the Interstat game simulator, which had projected a 4-3 Hanshin victory in a higher-scoring affair.

The most critical juncture of the contest came in the bottom of the ninth inning, with Takahashi protecting a fragile two-run lead. After allowing a leadoff single to Trey Cabbage and a one-out walk to Yuta Izuguchi, the Giants had the tying runs on base with power-hitting Bobby Dalbec at the plate. Dalbec grounded out to third, advancing both runners into scoring position. With two outs and the game on the line, Takahashi faced Yukinori Kishida. On a full count, the Hanshin ace fired a sweeping breaking ball that Kishida swung over, sealing the shutout and stranding the potential tying run 90 feet away.

Hanshin (1-1) provided just enough offense, scoring single runs in the first and eighth innings against a parade of Yomiuri pitchers. The Tigers struck immediately against Howard. Takumu Nakano, who finished 3-for-4, singled with one out in the first, stole second base, and came home on Shota Morishita’s sacrifice fly to left field.

That lone run stood for seven innings as Howard matched Takahashi zero for zero. The Yomiuri right-hander was sharp over six innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs while striking out seven. The Giants’ bullpen continued the stalemate initially, with Elvis Luciano and Ren Tawa each firing perfect innings with two strikeouts.

The Tigers finally secured a crucial insurance run in the eighth against reliever Kota Nakagawa. Nakano led off with a double down the left-field line. After a flyout, cleanup hitter Teruaki Sato delivered a clutch RBI single to shallow right, scoring Nakano to double the lead to 2-0.

That run proved monumental, as Takahashi navigated the ninth-inning threat. The complete-game effort improved his record to 1-0. Howard (0-1) was tagged with a hard-luck loss for Yomiuri (1-1).

The game was a defensive struggle marked by missed opportunities. Hanshin batters collected seven hits but went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Yomiuri’s offense was virtually nonexistent, managing only three singles and never advancing a runner past second base until the final inning. The Giants’ best chance prior to the ninth came in the fifth, when consecutive two-out singles by Kishida and Hayato Sakamoto put two on, but Takahashi induced an inning-ending groundout.

The victory levels the storied Central League rivals at 1-1 to open the 2026 season. The low-scoring result easily stayed under the pregame over/under line of 5.5 runs, though the combined two runs did exceed the line.

The two teams will conclude their opening series on Sunday at Tokyo Dome. Hanshin will then return to Koshien Stadium for a three-game set against the Yokohama BayStars starting Tuesday. Yomiuri embarks on a road trip, beginning a three-game series in Nagoya against the Chunichi Dragons on Tuesday.
