Rakuten at Orix

Preview: Golden Eagles, Buffaloes Set for Osaka Rematch

OSAKA, Japan (Interstat) — The Orix Buffaloes will seek immediate redemption Saturday evening when they host the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles at Osaka Dome, one night after a lopsided defeat opened their seasons.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time on March 28, 2026.

The Pacific League rivals are heading in opposite directions early. Rakuten (1-0) dominated Friday’s opener 10-0 behind a masterful pitching performance, while Orix (0-1) was shut out at home.

A quick turnaround pits the clubs against each other again, with the Buffaloes favored by projection systems to even the series. Interstat’s game simulator predicts a 4-2 Orix victory, and its ELO rating gives the Buffaloes a 56% probability to win.

The Golden Eagles will look to carry over momentum from a dominant all-around performance. Starter Kosei Shoji set the tone Friday, firing eight scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Offensively, foreign imports Carson McCusker (four RBIs) and Luke Voit (three RBIs) powered the 10-run, 13-hit attack.

Orix must find an answer after managing only four hits in the opener. Starter Naruki Teranishi took the loss despite a quality start, allowing two earned runs over six innings. The Buffaloes’ bullpen, however, faltered, surrendering eight runs over the final three frames.

Saturday’s matchup presents a classic early-season test of response. Can the Buffaloes’ lineup adjust and provide support for their pitching staff? Or will the Golden Eagles’ potent offense, which sent nine men to the plate in both the seventh and ninth innings Friday, continue its surge?

Following the game, the series concludes Sunday at Osaka Dome before both teams embark on extended road trips. Rakuten will host the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks for three games beginning Tuesday, while Orix travels to face the Saitama Seibu Lions for a three-game set starting the same day.
