Yamashita’s 11-Strikeout Gem Leads Buffaloes Past Golden Eagles
OSAKA, Japan (Interstat) — In a masterful pitching performance that silenced the bats of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Shunpeita Yamashita of the Orix Buffaloes delivered a career-high 11 strikeouts over seven dominant innings to lead his team to a 2-0 victory on Saturday evening at Osaka Dome.
A crowd of 27,850 watched as Yamashita, in just his second appearance of the season, completely controlled the game from the outset. He allowed only three hits and walked one, facing minimal threats while improving his personal record to 1-0. The win bolstered the Buffaloes’ position in the Pacific League standings, pushing their record to 70-64-3, while the Golden Eagles fell to 65-71-3.
The game was a tense pitchers’ duel for the first four innings, with Rakuten’s starter, Kosei Shoji, matching Yamashita zero for zero. Shoji was effective, scattering eight hits over seven-plus innings, but a single costly mistake in the fifth inning proved to be the difference.
The stalemate was broken decisively in the bottom of the fifth. Orix catcher Tomoya Mori was hit by a pitch from Shoji to lead off the inning. On the very next pitch, shortstop Kotaro Kurebayashi turned on a Shoji offering and launched a towering two-run home run deep to left field, plating the only runs of the contest.
The Buffaloes’ offense threatened to break the game open immediately after the homer. Taishi Hirooka followed with a double to right-center, and Keita Nakagawa singled, putting runners on first and second with still no outs. Shoji, however, showed resilience, inducing a flyout from Yuma Mune. After a single by Ryo Ohta loaded the bases, Shoji escaped further damage by getting Yuma Tongu to ground into an inning-ending double play.
That sequence preserved a manageable deficit, but the Golden Eagles’ offense had no answer for Yamashita and the Orix bullpen. Rakuten’s best scoring chance came in the top of the second inning. Designated hitter Luke Voit led off with a double, and a one-out walk to Daichi Suzuki put two runners on. With runners on second and third after a wild pitch, Yamashita dug deep, striking out both Rui Muneyama and Hikaru Ohta to extinguish the threat.
Rakuten managed only one other hit against Yamashita, a two-out single by Fumiya Kurokawa in the sixth inning, which was promptly erased when Voit grounded out. Yamashita retired the side in order in the first, third, and seventh innings, his overpowering stuff leaving Rakuten batters consistently off balance.
Following Yamashita’s departure, the Orix bullpen seamlessly closed the door. Sho Iwasaki worked a perfect eighth inning, striking out one. Closer Andres Machado then entered in the ninth and retired the side in order on a groundout and two soft fly balls to secure his 28th save of the season.
Shoji was charged with the loss, falling to 4-4 on the year, despite a quality start. Rakuten reliever Naoto Nishiguchi provided a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two.
The victory defied several pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a higher-scoring affair, with Orix winning 4-3, and the total score of two runs fell well under the over/under line of 6.5. Despite Rakuten being installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5, Orix’s victory, given a 55.6 percent probability by ELO ratings, tightened the race between the two clubs.
The game also continued a recent trend for both teams. For Rakuten, the loss was their third in a row, following a sweep at the hands of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. Orix, meanwhile, bounced back from a loss to the Chiba Lotte Marines in their previous outing and improved to 4-2 in their last six games.
The two teams will continue their series at Osaka Dome on Sunday, September 28, as the Golden Eagles look to snap their skid and the Buffaloes aim to build momentum for the final stretch of the season. Following this three-game set, both clubs have critical series against the Saitama Seibu Lions and each other again to conclude the regular season.
