Jarry stops 19 shots as Oilers beat Sharks 3‑1

SAN JOSE (Interstat) — Connor McDavid recorded his 13th point of the season and his 10th assist as the Edmonton Oilers beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Saturday for their fourth straight win. Tristan Jarry stopped 19 shots for Edmonton in the National Hockey League game at SAP Pavilion at San Jose in San Jose, Calif. The announced attendance was 17,435. Edmonton improved to 4-1-0, while San Jose fell to 3-2-0. Mattias Ekholm, Vasily Podkolzin and Alex Formenton scored for the Oilers. Macklin Celebrini scored for the Sharks.

Jarry was the top star for Edmonton. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, he made 19 saves on 20 shots. After a loss to Vancouver in his previous outing, Jarry was steady throughout and gave the Oilers a chance to build a lead. He denied San Jose on several looks in the middle of the game, including a stop on Macklin Celebrini, and held firm when the Sharks pushed late. Jarry’s work helped Edmonton secure its fourth consecutive victory and improved his season record to 1-0-0 in the game.

Edmonton opened the scoring in the first period. Mattias Ekholm scored his first goal of the season on a slap shot at 12:37 of the first, with assists from Isaac Howard and Josh Samanski. The Oilers carried that 1-0 lead into the second period and then added to it later in the game. Vasily Podkolzin scored his fifth goal of the season on a slap shot, assisted by Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard. Alex Formenton then scored his first goal on a backhand, with Mathieu Joseph and Connor Murphy assisting. San Jose finally broke through when Macklin Celebrini scored his first goal on a wrist shot, with Michael Misa assisting. The goal ended Jarry’s shutout bid, but Edmonton’s lead was never seriously threatened after that.

McDavid finished with one assist and four shots on goal. The 6-foot-1, 194-pound center also won faceoffs and hit Kiefer Sherwood in the third period. Leon Draisaitl recorded three shots on goal. Evan Bouchard had one assist and one shot. Isaac Howard added one assist, and Josh Samanski had one assist and one hit. Formenton contributed one goal, two shots and three hits. Podkolzin had one goal, one shot and two penalty minutes. Ekholm added one goal and two shots. For San Jose, Celebrini had one goal, three shots, two penalty minutes and one hit. The Sharks also received pressure from Michael Misa, who assisted on Celebrini’s goal, and Alexander Wennberg, who won several faceoffs. Yaroslav Askarov made saves for San Jose but took the loss.

The game featured a physical edge. San Jose’s Kiefer Sherwood was called for interference against Leon Draisaitl in the third period. Macklin Celebrini received a tripping penalty against Ryan Shea. Edmonton’s Vasily Podkolzin was assessed a slashing minor against Celebrini. Both teams had scoring chances around those penalties. McDavid hit the left post in the third period, and Celebrini hit the left post in the second. Formenton, Podkolzin and Samanski were among the Edmonton players who delivered hits, while San Jose’s Zack Ostapchuk, Barclay Goodrow and Dmitry Orlov were active in the hitting game. The Sharks could not convert enough of their chances against Jarry.

Edmonton also received strong defensive work from its blue line. Ekholm blocked shots and helped limit San Jose’s attack, while Bouchard moved the puck effectively and picked up an assist. Ty Emberson and Connor Murphy contributed blocks and hits, and Ryan Shea was involved in several defensive plays. The Oilers killed off San Jose’s power-play chance after Podkolzin’s penalty and protected the lead down the stretch. San Jose had some late pressure, including a shot by Tyler Toffoli that Jarry saved, but the Sharks could not find a second goal.

Edmonton entered the game as a pregame favorite and had won three straight before Saturday. The Oilers had previously beaten Anaheim, Seattle and Vancouver during the young season, with their only loss coming against Vancouver in overtime. San Jose had won three of its first four games, including overtime victories over Florida, Los Angeles and St. Louis. The Sharks had also lost at Dallas before returning home.
