Thunder Dominate Suns in Game 1 Rout
OKLAHOMA CITY (Interstat) — The Oklahoma City Thunder delivered a statement of intent to open their playoff campaign, overwhelming the Phoenix Suns with a dominant first quarter and relentless execution to secure a 119-84 victory in Game 1 of their first-round series Sunday afternoon at a raucous Paycom Center.
A sellout crowd of 18,203 watched the Thunder, the Western Conference’s top seed with a 65-18 record, immediately seize control against a Suns team they had split four regular-season meetings with. The most important stretch of the game came in the opening minutes, as Oklahoma City established a tone of defensive physicality and offensive fluidity from which Phoenix never recovered.
The Thunder opened the game on a 14-0 run, a blitz that forced an early Phoenix timeout just over four minutes into the contest. The sequence was fueled by stifling defense, including a Chet Holmgren steal and block, and efficient offense. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams orchestrated the attack, finding open shooters and cutters. Phoenix did not score until a Dillon Brooks 3-pointer at the 11:11 mark, by which time the outcome felt largely predetermined.
Oklahoma City’s lead ballooned to 35-20 by the end of the first quarter, shooting a blistering percentage while forcing the Suns into a series of turnovers and contested shots. The Thunder never looked back, extending the advantage to 65-44 by halftime and leading by as many as 37 points in the second half. The Suns, who finished the regular season 46-39, could not muster a single sustained run, their offense appearing disjointed against Oklahoma City’s length and switching schemes.
Jalen Williams was the catalyst for the Thunder, finishing with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists in just 29 minutes, setting the pace early with his aggressive drives and playmaking. Gilgeous-Alexander, the MVP candidate, added 25 points, seven assists and two blocks, controlling the game’s tempo without needing to force the action. Holmgren, the center from Minneapolis, anchored the defense with two blocks and seven rebounds while contributing 16 points, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first quarter that encapsulated Oklahoma City’s commanding start.
Devin Booker led a struggling Phoenix offense with 23 points and six rebounds, but was harassed into difficult shots and four turnovers. Jalen Green added 17 points and Dillon Brooks had 18, but the Suns shot poorly from the field and from 3-point range as a team, unable to find any consistent rhythm. The Thunder’s defensive activity, led by Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein (eight points, eight rebounds, two blocks), disrupted Phoenix’s sets all evening.
The victory gives Oklahoma City a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven matchup. The Thunder outperformed pregame expectations, having been installed as 13-point favorites with an over/under set at 215.5. The combined score of 203 fell under the total, largely due to Phoenix’s anemic offensive output.
The teams will reconvene at Paycom Center for Game 2 on Wednesday night. Phoenix must find answers for Oklahoma City’s defensive pressure and offensive versatility to avoid returning home in a deep series deficit. Based on Sunday’s comprehensive performance, the Thunder demonstrated why they entered the playoffs as the conference’s premier team, combining elite talent with a disciplined, unselfish system that proved too much for the Suns to handle in the series opener.
