Sale, Homers Lead Braves to Opening Day Win Over Royals
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (Interstat) — On a cool March evening that marked the start of a new season, the Atlanta Braves delivered a performance that was both methodical and explosive, decisively shutting out the Kansas City Royals 6-0 on Friday at Truist Park. In a game that defied pregame projections of a low-scoring affair, the Braves used a trio of home runs and a masterful start from Chris Sale to launch their 2026 campaign with a convincing victory before a sellout crowd of 39,697.
The most important sequence of the game came in the fourth inning, transforming a manageable 2-0 deficit for Kansas City into a commanding four-run chasm. After Royals starter Cole Ragans, who took the loss, walked catcher Jonah Heim with one out, center fielder Michael Harris II stepped in. Harris took a 1-1 offering and drove it on a line to right field for a two-run homer, scoring Heim ahead of him and effectively putting the game out of reach early. That blast underscored a Braves offensive approach that capitalized on key opportunities, contrasting sharply with the Royals’ repeated failures with men on base.
Sale, the winning pitcher, was the story for Atlanta. The veteran left-hander set the tone from the outset, silencing a Kansas City lineup that managed just three scattered hits against him over six dominant innings. He struck out six and walked two, facing his only significant threat in the second inning. In that frame, the Royals loaded the bases with one out on a single by Salvador Perez, a hit-by-pitch to Vinnie Pasquantino, and a walk to Jonathan India. Sale responded by striking out Starling Marte and then benefitted from a crucial inning-ending double play grounder from Isaac Collins to shortstop Mauricio Dubón. That double play snuffed out Kansas City’s best and only real scoring chance of the night.
Atlanta’s offense provided Sale with immediate support. In the bottom of the first, Ozzie Albies launched Ragans’ pitch over the left-field wall for a solo home run, giving the Braves a lead they would never relinquish. They added another run in the third when designated hitter Drake Baldwin led off the inning with a solo shot to right field, making it 2-0.
The game was sealed in the seventh inning against the Royals’ bullpen. Matt Olson led off with a double and scored, along with Austin Riley who had singled, on a two-run double by Dubón that split the gap in left-center field, pushing the Atlanta advantage to 6-0.
While the Braves racked up 11 hits, the Royals mustered only five, going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and grounding into two double plays. Bobby Witt Jr. collected two of Kansas City’s hits, both singles. The Royals’ bullpen, including Bailey Falter who allowed two runs in three innings of relief and Alex Lange who pitched a scoreless frame, performed adequately after Ragans’ departure. Ragans finished with a line of four innings pitched, allowing four runs on six hits, including two home runs.
The Braves’ relief corps preserved the shutout with efficiency. Robert Suarez worked a scoreless seventh despite allowing two hits, Tyler Kinley struck out one in a perfect eighth, and Dylan Lee set down the Royals in order in the ninth to close out the 6-0 victory. The game time was a brisk 2 hours, 28 minutes.
With the win, Atlanta begins the season 1-0, while Kansas City starts 0-1. The result contradicted the Interstat game simulator, which had projected a 1-0 Royals victory. While Atlanta’s ELO system gave the Braves a 53% probability to win, the final margin easily covered the pregame spread of -1.5. The combined total of six runs fell under the over/under line of 7.
The two teams will continue their opening series at Truist Park on Saturday. Kansas City will then return home for a series against the Minnesota Twins beginning Monday before hosting the Milwaukee Brewers. Atlanta will finish the series with the Royals before welcoming the Athletics for a three-game set starting Monday, followed by a road trip to Arizona and Los Angeles.
