Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Kyle Schwarber launched two home runs and drove in three, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night in Game 3 of their National League playoff series.
The win at Dodger Stadium, played before a crowd of 53,689, cut the Dodgers’ series lead to 2-1. Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday in Los Angeles.
Philadelphia broke open a tight contest with a five-run eighth inning, turning a 3-1 lead into a commanding advantage. The offensive outburst was more than enough for a dominant performance from the Phillies’ pitching staff.
Ranger Suárez earned the win, delivering five strong innings while allowing one run on five hits. He struck out four. The Phillies’ bullpen, led by Aaron Nola with two scoreless innings of relief, held the Dodgers to just one run over the final four frames.
Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto took the loss, surrendering three runs on seven hits over four innings of work.
The Dodgers struck first when Tommy Edman hit a solo home run to left-center field in the bottom of the third inning.
The Phillies answered immediately in the top of the fourth. Schwarber led off the inning with a solo shot to right field to tie the game. Bryce Harper followed with a single and later scored from first base on a single by Alec Bohm, who advanced to third on a throwing error by Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages. Bohm then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Marsh to give Philadelphia a 3-1 lead.
The game remained close until the Phillies sent 10 batters to the plate in the decisive eighth inning. J.T. Realmuto started the rally with a solo home run to left-center. Later in the inning, with two runners on, Trea Turner delivered a two-run single to center, extending the lead to 6-1. Schwarber then put the game out of reach, blasting a two-run homer to right field for his second of the game.
The Dodgers added a consolation run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Edman, his second run batted in of the night.
Turner finished the game 3 for 5 with two RBIs for the Phillies, who outhit the Dodgers 12 to 8.
The victory improved Philadelphia’s season record to 97-68, while the Dodgers fell to 97-70. The result was an upset according to pregame projections, which heavily favored Los Angeles.
