Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a taut, back-and-forth playoff battle, the New York Yankees edged the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, knotting their American League Division Series at one game apiece.

A crowd of 47,993 watched as the Yankees scored the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a clutch, two-out single by catcher Austin Wells, setting the stage for a pivotal Game 3 on Thursday.

The Yankees struck first, capitalizing quickly in the bottom of the first inning against Boston starter Brayan Bello. After two quick outs, Cody Bellinger kept the inning alive with a single. Rookie Ben Rice then delivered a dramatic blow, launching a two-run homer to right field to give New York an early 2-0 lead.

Boston methodically fought back, tying the game in the top of the third. Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela reached on a single and a walk, respectively. A sacrifice bunt attempt by Nick Sogard turned into a bases-loaded opportunity when Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón committed a throwing error. While Rob Refsnyder struck out, Trevor Story came through with a sharp two-run single to center field, scoring both Duran and Rafaela to level the score at 2-2.

The Red Sox took their first lead in the sixth when Story connected again, this time for a solo home run to left-center field off reliever Fernando Cruz, putting Boston ahead 3-2.

The lead was short-lived. New York answered in the bottom of the fifth. After a walk to Trent Grisham, Aaron Judge laced a run-scoring single to left field, allowing Grisham to score and tie the game 3-3.

The game remained deadlocked into the late innings, setting the stage for the Yankees’ eighth-inning rally against Boston reliever Garrett Whitlock. Whitlock retired the first two batters before walking Jazz Chisholm Jr. Wells then stepped up and lined a single to right field, scoring the speedy Chisholm Jr. from first base to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead. Anthony Volpe followed with another single, and a walk loaded the bases, but Whitlock escaped further damage.

In the ninth, Yankees closer David Bednar shut the door, retiring the side in order to secure the save and even the series.

Devin Williams, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning for New York, was credited with the win. Whitlock took the loss for Boston. The Yankees outhit the Red Sox 10-6, with Story’s home run and two-run single accounting for the bulk of Boston’s offense.

The series now moves to a crucial third game on Thursday, with the winner taking a 2-1 series lead. The Red Sox’s season record moves to 90-74, while the Yankees improve to 95-69.
