San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs

CHICAGO (Interstat) — The National League playoffs open Tuesday at Wrigley Field with a compelling matchup between two teams that split six regular-season meetings, as the Chicago Cubs host the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of their best-of-five series.

The Cubs (92-70), who earned home-field advantage with a better record than the Padres (90-72), will play their first postseason game at the Friendly Confines since 2018. San Diego returns to the playoffs after a narrow miss last season.

Both teams ended the regular season on a high note. The Padres swept a three-game set from the Arizona Diamondbacks, capped by a 12-4 rout Sunday where Manny Machado homered and Jackson Merrill drove in three runs. The Cubs took two of three from the St. Louis Cardinals, finishing with a 2-0 shutout Sunday behind strong pitching from Javier Assad and Jordan Wicks.

Their head-to-head series in April was a back-and-forth affair, with the Padres winning the final game 4-2 after the teams traded victories in the first five contests. The Cubs won the season series 4-2.

First pitch is scheduled for Tuesday evening. The forecast calls for clear skies and a game-time temperature of 80 degrees. According to Interstat, the Padres are the pregame favorites, projected to win 7-4.
