Machado powers Padres past Diamondbacks to secure home-field edge

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Manny Machado homered and drove in three runs, Yuki Matsui earned the win in relief, and the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-7 on Saturday at Petco Park to clinch their third straight 90-win season and home-field advantage in the National League Wild Card Series. The Padres will meet the Chicago Cubs in the first round after the Philadelphia Phillies lost to Tampa Bay earlier Saturday. San Diego improved to 90-71, while Arizona fell to 87-75. The game drew 44,698 and took 3 hours, 6 minutes. Matsui improved to 5-1. Arizona’s Jose Cabrera dropped to 0-4. The victory capped a regular-season series that Arizona had opened with an 11-4 win Friday.

San Diego struck first in the opening inning. Dustin Harris singled, Machado moved him with a single, and Jackson Merrill drove Harris home with a single to center. Ty France was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Gavin Sheets popped out under the infield fly rule and Xander Bogaerts struck out on a foul tip, ending the threat. Arizona answered in the second when Geraldo Perdomo walked, Corbin Carroll singled and Nolan Arenado’s groundout brought Perdomo across to tie the score. The Diamondbacks then took a brief lead in the third when Tim Tawa singled, moved up on Ketel Marte’s groundout and scored on Gabriel Moreno’s line-drive single to right.

San Diego reclaimed the advantage in the bottom of the third. Harris tripled to center, Merrill was intentionally walked, and France’s groundout scored Harris to tie the game. Sheets followed with an RBI double that plated Merrill, giving the Padres a 3-2 lead. Arizona responded in the fourth. After Arenado was hit by a pitch, Pavin Smith reached on a forceout, and James McCann launched a two-run homer to center field. That gave the Diamondbacks a 4-3 edge and briefly quieted the Petco Park crowd.

Machado answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth. Ethan Salas singled, Fernando Tatis Jr. walked, and Harris bunted into a popout, but Machado crushed a three-run homer to right field. The blast, Machado’s 30th of the season, scored Salas and Tatis and pushed San Diego ahead 6-4. Machado finished 2 for 5 with one home run and three RBIs. He entered the game after a quiet stretch that included an 0-for-4 performance against Arizona on Friday and an 0-for-4 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he delivered the game’s most important swing.

The Padres kept building. In the fifth, Bogaerts homered to left, Jake Cronenworth doubled and Salas singled. Tatis then grounded out to second, allowing Cronenworth to score and extending the lead to 8-4. San Diego added two more in the sixth. Merrill singled, France singled and Bogaerts walked to load the bases. Cronenworth then singled to center, scoring Merrill and France. Cronenworth finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. The two-run single gave the Padres a 10-4 cushion and proved to be the difference after Arizona’s late push.

San Diego’s offense finished with 13 hits and repeatedly took advantage of Arizona’s mistakes. Harris tripled, Merrill and France each contributed key singles, and Bogaerts added a home run. The Padres scored in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Their most decisive stretch came when they turned a one-run deficit in the fourth into a two-run lead, then added two runs in each of the next two innings. That pressure kept Arizona from settling into the game after McCann’s home run had given the Diamondbacks brief hope.

Arizona’s bullpen kept the game within reach. Justin Martinez pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Juan Morillo recorded two outs without allowing a hit. Kevin Ginkel worked a third of an inning and struck out one. McCann went 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for Arizona. San Diego’s relief corps also held firm. Bradgley Rodriguez tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. David Morgan and Adrian Morejon each threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Matsui earned the win with one-third of an inning and one strikeout.

Arizona did not go quietly in the ninth. Tawa singled, Lars Nootbaar walked and Marte singled to load the bases. After Adrian Del Castillo struck out, Perdomo walked to force home Tawa. Carroll then grounded into a forceout that scored Nootbaar, and Arenado singled to center to bring home Marte. Ildemaro Vargas struck out swinging to end the game. The Diamondbacks finished with 10 hits, while San Diego had 13. Arizona’s pitchers combined for 18 strikes, 73 balls and 18 balls in play. San Diego’s staff combined for 14 strikes, 61 balls and 14 balls in play.

The loss ended a strong late-season stretch for Arizona, which had won six of seven entering Saturday, including the series opener. The Diamondbacks could not overcome San Diego’s scoring burst across the third through sixth innings. Arizona had chances to keep pressure on the Padres, but strikeouts and groundouts repeatedly stalled its rallies until the ninth. The Padres, meanwhile, secured the home-field edge for the Wild Card Series against Chicago. San Diego’s 90th win also ensured a third consecutive season with at least 90 victories. The teams are scheduled to conclude the series Sunday at Petco Park.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 9, San Diego 7. Interstat’s ELO system gave San Diego a 56.6 percent probability to win. Arizona had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total of 17 finished over the over/under line of 7.5.
