Carrigg’s two-run single in seventh lifts Rockies over Mariners

DENVER (Interstat) — Cole Carrigg hit a bases-loaded, two-out single in the seventh inning that scored two runs, and the Colorado Rockies rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night at Coors Field.

Before the game, Colorado honored Hall of Famer Todd Helton with a statue outside the ballpark. Carrigg then delivered the decisive swing as the Rockies won for the eighth time in their past 31 games. Colorado improved to 57-98. Seattle dropped to 72-83.

The Mariners built a 3-0 lead against Colorado left-hander Jose Quintana. In the first, J.P. Crawford struck out swinging and Randy Arozarena grounded out before Dominic Canzone walked. Cal Raleigh followed with a two-run homer to left-center field. Julio Rodríguez flied out sharply to left fielder Jake McCarthy to end the inning.

Seattle added to its lead in the third. After Crawford struck out, Arozarena homered to left-center. Canzone singled sharply to center, Raleigh flied out to right, and Julio Rodríguez singled to put runners on the corners. Josh Naylor then drove a ball to deep center field, but Carrigg tracked it down for the final out, ending the threat.

The Rockies got a run back in the bottom of the third. Jake McCarthy singled on a soft bunt and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Cal Raleigh. Connor Norby flied out to right fielder Dominic Canzone. McCarthy scored, and Canzone committed a throwing error on the play, cutting Seattle’s lead to 3-1.

Seattle’s Michael Arroyo singled in the second, but Lazaro Montes and Weston Wilson grounded out. In the bottom half, Carrigg struck out, Kyle Karros walked, and Mickey Moniak struck out before Zac Veen was called out on strikes following a pitch-result challenge.

Seattle right-hander Bryce Miller kept the Rockies quiet for much of the night. He allowed four hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings, walking two and striking out six. He retired the side in order in the fourth and worked around a walk to Veen in the fifth. His work preserved the Mariners’ advantage until the bullpen faltered in the seventh.

Both starters settled in after the early scoring. Quintana worked around a walk to Canzone in the fifth and kept Seattle off the board. Miller did the same against Colorado, mixing his fastball and breaking ball to keep the Rockies from mounting a rally.

The Mariners missed a chance to add insurance in the sixth. Julio Rodríguez doubled to right, and Josh Naylor grounded out to move him to third. Michael Arroyo then lined into an unassisted double play, with third baseman Kyle Karros catching the ball and doubling Rodríguez off third.

Colorado had traffic in the bottom of the sixth but could not score. Norby struck out, Rumfield singled to center, and Goodman singled to left. Carrigg grounded into a force out, and Karros grounded into another force out to end the inning.

The Rockies sent eight batters to the plate in the seventh. Zac Veen singled, and Adael Amador singled to put runners on the corners. Jake McCarthy grounded out softly to pitcher José A. Ferrer, scoring Veen. Connor Norby singled, and TJ Rumfield followed with a single that scored Amador and tied the game. Hunter Goodman walked to load the bases, and Carrigg lined a single to center field that scored Norby and Rumfield. The two-run hit gave Colorado a 5-3 lead. Kyle Karros walked behind Carrigg, but Mickey Moniak grounded into a force out to end the inning.

Cooper Criswell allowed Carrigg’s tiebreaking single and walked two batters in one-third of an inning. Ferrer took the loss, falling to 4-4. Juan Mejia earned the win in relief, improving to 4-6. Brennan Bernardino worked a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Seattle tried to answer in the eighth. Arozarena grounded out, Canzone flied out, and Raleigh doubled to left. Julio Rodríguez grounded out to third, leaving Raleigh stranded. In the ninth, Naylor grounded out before Arroyo singled to right. Lazaro Montes struck out swinging, and Weston Wilson struck out on a foul tip to end the game.

Colorado’s bullpen was sharp after Quintana’s four-inning start. Quintana allowed five hits and three earned runs, walked one and struck out two. Nick Frasso pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Mejia followed with two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out two. Bernardino allowed one hit and struck out two in the ninth.

Seattle’s bullpen could not hold the lead. Ferrer was charged with the loss. Criswell walked two and gave up Carrigg’s hit. Speier was effective, but the Mariners could not rally.

For Seattle, Gabe Speier pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Arroyo had two hits, including a single in the ninth. Raleigh had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Arozarena had one hit, a home run, and one RBI. Rodríguez had two hits, including a double.

The loss was Seattle’s first in the series after a 5-4 win Friday night. A night earlier, Carrigg was thrown out attempting to steal third in the ninth inning as the potential tying run. Mickey Moniak struck out to end that game. Carrigg’s performance Saturday helped Colorado avoid a second straight defeat and prevented its 99th loss of the season.

The game took 2 hours, 47 minutes and drew 34,457 fans. Seattle is scheduled to visit Colorado again Sunday. The Mariners next return home to face Houston on Tuesday. Colorado remains at home for a series against Arizona beginning Tuesday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Seattle 5, Colorado 3. Its ELO system gave Seattle a 61.5 percent pregame probability to win. Seattle was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score was 8 against an over/under line of 10.5.
