Arizona Diamondbacks at Kansas City Royals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to complete a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at Kauffman Stadium.
Arizona (78-68) has won the first two games of the series, both in extra innings. The Diamondbacks won 5-4 in 10 innings Monday and 5-3 in 11 innings Tuesday. They enter the finale as a 1.5-run favorite, with Interstat projecting a 6-3 Arizona victory and giving the Diamondbacks a 53.40 percent chance to win. The over-under is 8.5.
Left-hander Daniel Lynch IV is the probable pitcher for Arizona. He enters with a 4-5 record.
Kansas City (64-82) will look to avoid the sweep and snap a two-game skid. The Royals have lost four of six. Right-hander Michael Wacha is a player to watch for Kansas City. Wacha has been sharp recently, allowing three hits over six scoreless innings with four strikeouts Tuesday against Arizona. He also struck out 10 over eight scoreless innings August 28 at Cleveland and has yielded one earned run or fewer in three of his past five starts.
Arizona outfielder Tim Tawa is another player to watch. Tawa went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs in Tuesday’s 5-3 win. Over his past 10 games, Tawa is batting .257 (9 for 35) with one homer and two RBIs. The Diamondbacks also have gotten strong recent pitching from Corbin Burnes, who tossed three scoreless innings in Tuesday’s win, and Blake Walston, who added two scoreless innings.
The forecast for Wednesday’s game calls for cloudy skies and a game-time temperature of 94 degrees.
Arizona has won four of its past five games, including three straight. The Diamondbacks are 10 games above .500 and remain in the middle of the playoff race. Kansas City, meanwhile, has struggled at home and is 18 games below .500. The Royals have been led recently by Wacha, who has been among their most consistent starters.
Following Wednesday’s series finale, Arizona will return home to open a three-game series against Texas on Friday. Kansas City will travel to Boston for a three-game set starting Friday. The Diamondbacks then host Miami and the New York Yankees before a trip to Colorado on Sept. 22. The Royals will visit Houston and Pittsburgh before hosting the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 22.
Tim Tawa’s recent game log includes hits in six of his past 10 games, including a 3-for-5 effort Tuesday. Lynch IV will try to continue Arizona’s recent success against Kansas City. The Diamondbacks have won the first two meetings of the series by a combined 10-7 score.
