Toronto Blue Jays at Athletics

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Toronto Blue Jays open a three-game series against the Athletics on Monday night at Sutter Health Park with Dylan Cease on the mound.

Toronto enters at 72-72 and is coming off a 6-1 loss Sunday at Kansas City that snapped a four-game winning streak. Cease, 10-5, will look to help the Blue Jays regain momentum in the opener of the series.

The Athletics, 57-87, lost 2-0 at Seattle on Sunday after winning four straight. The forecast at first pitch calls for clear skies and 70 degrees.

Toronto won all three meetings between the teams in late March at Rogers Centre in Toronto, outscoring the Athletics 16-11. The Blue Jays swept a three-game set from March 27-29.

Reliever Joe Mantiply has been a bright spot for Toronto in recent outings. In Sunday’s loss at Kansas City, he threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. He also threw two scoreless innings Sept. 4 against the Royals. Mantiply allowed two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings Sept. 1 at Cleveland, but he has not allowed an earned run in two of his last three appearances.

For the Athletics, reliever Seth Johnson is a player to watch. Johnson threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts in Sunday’s loss at Seattle. He also threw a scoreless inning Aug. 12 against Tampa Bay. In between, he allowed two earned runs in one inning Aug. 17 at Kansas City, but he has been effective in two of his last three appearances.

The Blue Jays’ offense has been productive during their recent stretch, though Sunday’s loss was a setback. Toronto won 4-3 at Kansas City on Sept. 5, 9-2 on Sept. 4 and outscored Cleveland 17-3 in two wins Sept. 3-4. The Athletics also had won 6-2, 7-6 and 7-4 at Seattle from Sept. 4-6 before Sunday’s shutout loss.

Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-5 Toronto win, and Interstat’s ELO system gives the Blue Jays a 62.7 percent probability to win. Toronto is a 1.5-run favorite in the opener, with an over/under of 8.5.

The series continues Tuesday and Wednesday at Sutter Health Park before Toronto returns home for a set with Baltimore on Friday. The Athletics host Seattle next weekend, then begin a road trip at Tampa Bay on Sept. 15.
