Padres blank Reds 5‑0 behind King’s six strong innings
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — Manny Machado collected four hits and Michael King pitched six scoreless innings as the San Diego Padres shut out the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 on Monday at Great American Ball Park.
San Diego improved to 73-65 while Cincinnati fell to 65-73. The Padres won for the first time in three games after being swept in a weekend series at Tampa Bay, and they took the opener of a two-game set against the Reds. The game lasted 2:50 with an announced attendance of 16,162.
The decisive moment came in the fourth inning when San Diego sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs off Reds starter Brady Singer. Machado led off with a single to left and Ty France followed with a single to left, putting runners at the corners. Jackson Merrill then singled to right, scoring Machado and moving France to second. Xander Bogaerts followed with a sharp double to left, driving in France and Merrill and stretching the lead to three runs. Dustin Harris capped the rally with a single to right, scoring Bogaerts and giving the Padres a 4-0 advantage.
Singer labored through the inning and finished the game having allowed four earned runs and 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five and took the loss, dropping to 5-13 on the season.
King, meanwhile, kept Cincinnati off the board through six innings. The Padres right-hander allowed four hits and struck out six without walking a batter. He navigated early threats in the first and second innings when the Reds put runners on base but came away empty. He was aided by a double play in the fifth after a leadoff walk to Elly De La Cruz, and he left after six with the Padres holding a four-run lead. King improved his record to 9-9 with the victory.
The Reds had their best scoring chance in the sixth. Tyler Stephenson singled to right with one out and Eugenio Suárez struck out for the second out. Matt McLain was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second, but TJ Friedl lined out to right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. to end the inning.
San Diego added an insurance run in the seventh. Tatis led off with a double to center, advanced to third on a fly out by Jake Cronenworth, and scored on France’s ground single to right. That made it 5-0.
Kyle Hart relieved King and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out four. Wandy Peralta worked the ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one to close out the shutout.
Machado went 4-for-5 with a double and two singles. He had a leadoff double in the first but was left stranded. France finished with three hits and an RBI. Bogaerts drove in two runs with his double. Merrill also drove in a run and reached base three times. Tatis doubled once and scored once.
Cincinnati managed five hits, with Héctor Rodríguez, Sal Stewart, Matt McLain, Tyler Stephenson and Dane Myers each getting one. The Reds threatened in the first inning when Rodríguez singled and Stewart doubled, putting runners at second and third with one out. But JJ Bleday grounded out and Tyler Stephenson struck out to end the inning.
In the second, Eugenio Suárez was hit by a pitch and McLain singled, putting two on with no outs. Friedl grounded into a force out and then two strikeouts followed as the Padres escaped again.
Cincinnati bullpen work after Singer was solid. Julian Garcia threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Tony Santillan, Tejay Antone and Pierce Johnson each worked an inning. Johnson allowed the final Padres run in the seventh, surrendering three hits and one earned run.
San Diego’s bullpen combination of Hart and Peralta preserved King’s win and secured the team’s first shutout victory since a 3-0 home win over Pittsburgh on Aug. 26.
The Reds left five runners on base and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. San Diego stranded eight but capitalized when it mattered most.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again Tuesday in the finale of this two-game series at Great American Ball Park. San Diego then returns home for a weekend series against the New York Yankees, while Cincinnati hosts Milwaukee for a three-game set beginning Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of San Diego Padres 5, Cincinnati Reds 6. Interstat’s ELO system projected San Diego with a 57.00 percent probability to win.
