Brewers roll past Rangers behind Henderson’s strong start
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Logan Henderson pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball and William Contreras drove in three runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Texas Rangers 6-1 on Friday at American Family Field.
Henderson (9-2) struck out seven and walked none. He allowed only Danny Jansen’s solo home run in the third inning and retired the Rangers in order in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. Henderson has now won consecutive starts after beating Atlanta on Aug. 22.
The Brewers staked Henderson to a 2-0 lead in the first. Brice Turang reached on a bunt single and advanced to second when Texas starter Cody Bradford threw wildly to first. After Jackson Chourio flied out, Jake Bauers walked. Contreras grounded out to shortstop, scoring Turang. Christian Yelich doubled to center, scoring Bauers and giving Milwaukee an early edge.
Jansen pulled Texas within 2-1 when he homered to left to open the third. It was the first hit off Henderson, who had been perfect through two innings. The Rangers managed only two hits in the game. Justin Foscue singled off DL Hall in the eighth inning, but the Rangers could not push him across. Cody Freeman walked to put two on with one out, and Jansen grounded out to end the threat.
Bradford (0-3) took the loss. He allowed nine hits and three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. Bradford recovered after a choppy first inning, retiring the side in order in the second, fourth and fifth innings. But the Brewers kept pressure on with a steady stream of singles and walks.
Milwaukee extended its lead in the sixth. Yelich singled to open the inning, but Joey Ortiz bunted into a popout and Garrett Mitchell grounded into a forceout, erasing Yelich. Sal Frelick walked to put two on, and David Hamilton lined a single to center, scoring Mitchell and stretching the lead to 3-1. That proved to be the decisive sequence, as Texas could not answer against Henderson or the Milwaukee bullpen.
The Brewers added another run in the seventh. Bauers walked and came home on Contreras’ single to center, making it 4-1. Contreras finished the night with three RBIs, including a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Milwaukee put the game away in the eighth against Texas reliever Adam Macko. Frelick singled on a bunt, and Hamilton followed with a bunt single. After Brice Turang struck out, Chourio singled to left, scoring Frelick. Bauers walked to load the bases, and Contreras lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hamilton to set the final margin.
Yelich went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Contreras went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a sacrifice fly. Hamilton went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Frelick singled, doubled and walked. The Brewers finished with 14 hits, while Texas had two.
DL Hall struck out three in a perfect eighth inning for Milwaukee. Aaron Ashby allowed one hit and struck out two in the ninth. Tyler Alexander pitched a third of an inning for Texas, and Macko allowed two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.
The win improved the Brewers to 84-51, matching the best record in the National League. The Rangers fell to 66-69 with their fourth loss in five games. Milwaukee has won four of its past five.
The announced attendance was 41,620, and the game lasted 2 hours 42 minutes.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a 6-4 Brewers win. Interstat’s ELO system gave Milwaukee a 67.30 percent probability to win. The Brewers were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of seven went over the over/under line of 7.5.
