Philadelphia Phillies at Seattle Mariners

SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies open a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Monday, Aug. 24, at T-Mobile Park, where the forecast calls for clear skies and 72 degrees at game time.

Right-hander Zack Wheeler (10-4) is scheduled to start for Philadelphia against Seattle right-hander Logan Gilbert (10-7).

The Phillies enter with an overall record of 75-59 and have won 10 straight games. In Sunday’s 6-4 victory over St. Louis, Cristopher Sánchez earned the win, allowing four earned runs over 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts. Kyle Schwarber went 1 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs, and Edmundo Sosa went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Philadelphia’s recent run includes series sweeps of Miami and Minnesota, plus a three-game sweep of St. Louis that ended Sunday. The Phillies’ last loss came Aug. 12 at St. Louis.

The Mariners, 62-69, are coming off a 19-2 home loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Eduard Bazardo threw a scoreless inning in that game. Over his past seven appearances, Bazardo has allowed one earned run in 7 2/3 innings.

Sánchez remains a key player to watch for Philadelphia despite not starting Monday. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts, and he has been a major factor in the Phillies’ pitching depth behind Wheeler.

For Seattle, Bazardo has been effective in bulk relief and could again be used out of the bullpen. He has struck out at least one batter in five of his past six appearances and has shown the ability to pitch multiple innings.

Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-6 Philadelphia victory. Interstat’s ELO system gives the Phillies a 56.30 percent probability to win. Philadelphia is a minus-1.5 run-line favorite, and the over/under is 6.5 runs.

The teams will play again Tuesday and Wednesday at T-Mobile Park. After the series, Philadelphia travels to Los Angeles to face the Angels before visiting Arizona. Seattle heads to Toronto and Boston after the three-game set.

Monday’s matchup begins a stretch critical for Seattle as it tries to build momentum after a difficult August stretch. The Mariners have won six of their last 10 despite Sunday’s lopsided loss, and Gilbert will look to give the home team a strong start.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, continues to chase the top of the standings with one of baseball’s most complete lineups. Wheeler gives the Phillies a reliable anchor on the mound as they open a road trip that will take them through three cities over the next week.
