Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The Cincinnati Reds open a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday night at Oracle Park, with Chase Burns on the mound and both teams trying to stabilize uncertain seasons.

Cincinnati (62-69) will send Burns to the hill. The right-hander carries a 14-2 record into his start and has been the Reds’ most consistent presence on the mound. Cincinnati is 62-69 overall and has lost four of its past six, including a 5-3 defeat at Arizona on Sunday.

Despite the loss, Andrew Abbott turned in a serviceable outing in that game, allowing four earned runs over six innings with six strikeouts. Abbott is a player to watch for the Reds, though his recent results have been uneven. He worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs in a loss to St. Louis on Aug. 18, but he was touched for five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in a win at Chicago on Aug. 13. In his other appearances since Aug. 1, he has mixed quality length with short, high-count outings.

San Francisco (52-78) has lost four straight after a 5-4 defeat at Boston on Sunday. The Giants’ bullpen has been busy, and left-handed reliever Sam Hentges has been a frequent presence. Hentges threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in Boston on Sunday. He had a tougher outing the day before, allowing two earned runs in 1/3 inning. Across his past 10 appearances, Hentges has pitched in a variety of leverage spots and remains a key piece for a Giants staff looking for reliability.

The teams met in Cincinnati in April, and the Reds won two of three, taking 8-3 and 2-1 decisions before falling 3-0 in the finale. San Francisco’s Sunday loss came despite a home run from Jonah Cox, and the Giants will look for more offense against Burns at home.

Weather Monday is expected to be cloudy with temperatures near 63 degrees at first pitch.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Reds victory. The ELO model, however, gives San Francisco a 51.60 percent chance to win. Cincinnati is listed as a 1.5-run favorite, and the over/under is set at 8.

The series continues Tuesday and Wednesday, also at Oracle Park. Cincinnati then travels to Chicago for a three-game set against the Cubs, while San Francisco hosts Arizona beginning Thursday.
