Pittsburgh Pirates at San Diego Padres
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Pittsburgh Pirates visit the San Diego Padres on Monday night at PETCO Park, with cloudy skies and a 79-degree forecast for game time.
Pittsburgh enters at 65-70 after losing three straight, including a 4-0 shutout at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. San Diego is 71-60 and has won three in a row after an 8-1 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.
The Pirates list Braxton Ashcraft (13-5) as their probable starter. Pittsburgh also has Robbie Ray (11-7) listed as a probable pitcher for the series. San Diego has not announced a corresponding starter.
The Padres took two of three from Pittsburgh in April, winning 8-2 and 5-0 before falling 7-1. San Diego has won four of its past five games overall.
Fernando Tatis Jr. has been the engine of the Padres’ offense. He is 10 for 17 with two home runs and seven RBIs over his past four games, including a 4-for-5 performance Sunday with two homers and four RBIs against the Twins. Tatis also homered and drove in three runs Aug. 18 at New York, and he went 3 for 4 with an RBI on Aug. 21 against Minnesota.
For Pittsburgh, Khristian Curtis is a player to watch. In his most recent appearance on Sunday at Los Angeles, Curtis pitched three scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out one in the Pirates’ 4-0 loss.
Pittsburgh’s offense has struggled during its skid, scoring three or fewer runs in each of the past three games. The Pirates totaled four runs in two losses at Dodger Stadium after managing four in a 4-3 loss to Los Angeles on Aug. 22.
San Diego’s pitching has been steady. Walker Buehler threw six innings Sunday, allowing one earned run while striking out four, and Wandy Peralta added two scoreless innings of relief.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 San Diego victory and gives the Padres a 60.1 percent probability to win. Pittsburgh, though, is installed as a -1.5 run-line favorite, meaning oddsmakers expect the Pirates to win by two or more. The over/under is 7.5 runs.
The series continues Tuesday and Wednesday at PETCO Park. Pittsburgh then travels to St. Louis for a three-game weekend set, while San Diego heads to Tampa Bay for three games beginning Friday.
