Tommy Edman’s single in 10th lifts Dodgers past Pirates
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Tommy Edman lined a two-out single to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring Enrique Hernandez and giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.
Hernandez began the 10th by drawing a walk from Gregory Soto. Soto then intentionally walked Mookie Betts to put runners on first and second. Kyle Tucker followed with a grounder to second that forced Betts, but Hernandez advanced to third. Edman sent the next pitch to left, and Hernandez crossed the plate before the throw arrived, setting off a celebration near home plate.
The Dodgers raised their record to 78-51 with the win. The Pirates fell to 63-67.
Evan Phillips (1-2) earned the victory with a nerve-filled top of the 10th. Bryan Reynolds singled with one out, and after Phillips struck out Nick Gonzales, he intentionally walked Oneil Cruz to put two men on. Henry Davis then grounded into a double play, shortstop Mookie Betts to second baseman Tommy Edman to first baseman Freddie Freeman, to end the Pirates’ threat. Gregory Soto (5-4) took the loss after walking two batters and allowing Edman’s decisive hit.
The game went to extra innings because the Pirates rallied in the eighth. Facing reliever Edgardo Henriquez, Bryan Reynolds doubled to right field. Oneil Cruz followed by driving a 1-1 pitch over the center-field wall for a two-run home run, his 16th of the season, tying the game at 4. Cruz went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and Reynolds finished 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored.
Pittsburgh had struck first in the opening inning. Brandon Lowe singled with one out, advanced to second when Bryan Reynolds was hit by a pitch, and scored on Nick Gonzales’ line-drive single to center. The Dodgers answered immediately in the bottom of the first. Shohei Ohtani walked and Max Muncy followed with a two-run homer to right field, his 26th of the season, giving Los Angeles a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates pulled even in the third. Lowe hit a ground-rule double down the left-field line, and Gonzales delivered another RBI single, this time to center, tying the game at 2. The Dodgers regained the lead in the bottom half of that inning. Hunter Feduccia doubled to lead off, Ohtani singled to put runners at the corners, and after Freddie Freeman lined out and Andy Pages was hit by a pitch to fill the bases, Mookie Betts singled to center, scoring Feduccia and Ohtani to make it 4-2. Kyle Tucker walked later in the inning, reloading the bases, but Edman struck out swinging to end the threat.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers’ top star in the game, kept the Pirates from further damage after that. The right-hander scattered five hits over 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out nine. Yamamoto did not issue a walk. In his previous outing on Aug. 14 against Milwaukee, Yamamoto earned the win with six innings of one-run ball and nine strikeouts.
Henriquez followed Yamamoto and stranded two runners in the seventh. He issued a walk to Pirate reliever? Actually he pitched in relief and struck out two in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Brock Stewart added two-thirds of a scoreless inning with one strikeout.
Pittsburgh’s bullpen also kept the Dodgers off balance for several innings. Luke Weaver struck out three in a scoreless inning, Mason Montgomery struck out two in another scoreless frame, Kirby Yates allowed one hit over an inning, and Lake Bachar struck out one in a scoreless inning. But the Pirates were unable to pad their lead, and the Dodgers broke through in the 10th.
The game featured several tense moments in the middle innings. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the third but came away with only two runs. They also put two men on in the seventh when Ohtani walked and Muncy walked before Mookie Betts walked to load the bases with two outs, but Kyle Tucker flied out to center to end the inning. The Pirates, meanwhile, had a runner reach third in the seventh when Jake Mangum doubled to lead off, but he was left stranded.
After the Pirates tied it in the eighth, both bullpens took over. The Dodgers went quietly in the bottom of the eighth and ninth. Pittsburgh threatened in the top of the 10th, but Phillips escaped on the double play. That set up Edman’s winning single, sending the announced crowd of 51,872 home happy.
The game lasted 3:20. The two teams continue the three-game series Saturday night at Dodger Stadium, then the Pirates travel to San Diego and the Dodgers fly to Atlanta.
