Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Alex Bregman lined a run-scoring single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
Bregman’s hit scored Carson Kelly from second base and completed a comeback from an early two-run deficit and a later one-run hole. The Cubs trailed 3-2 entering the seventh inning before Bregman tied it with a two-out single. He then won it with his second RBI of the game, sending the announced crowd of 40,304 home happy after a crisp 2-hour, 59-minute contest.
The White Sox struck first in the second inning when Drew Romo singled to left field, scoring Chase Meidroth. One inning later, Munetaka Murakami tied the game with his 29th home run of the season, a fly ball to left-center field off Cubs starter Kevin Gausman. The White Sox took the lead in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Colson Montgomery and Tristan Peters. Montgomery led off the inning with a sharp line-drive double to right, and Peters brought him home with a line-drive double to center.
That rally came after the Cubs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Pete Crow-Armstrong started the scoring with his 31st home run of the season, a fly ball to right-center. Michael Busch followed later in the inning with his 15th homer, also to right-center, and the Cubs had the early advantage.
White Sox starter Erick Fedde settled in after that, allowing no earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. He scattered three hits and struck out five, but did not factor into the decision. The White Sox bullpen kept the game in hand before the Cubs broke through in the seventh.
Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and was replaced by pinch runner Kevin Alcántara. Michael Conforto then walked, and after two strikeouts, Bregman singled to left, scoring Alcántara and sending Conforto to third. The inning ended when Busch grounded out, and the game moved to the eighth tied at 3.
Jacob Webb pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Cubs and earned the victory, improving to 6-2 on the season. He induced a groundout from Randal Grichuk, then walked Sam Antonacci before getting Murakami to ground out softly to first base to end the top of the ninth.
Trevor Richards took the loss for the White Sox, falling to 0-1. He entered in the eighth and worked around a pair of fly outs before the Cubs mounted their ninth-inning rally. Carson Kelly doubled to left with one out, but Michael Conforto struck out looking. Richards then intentionally walked Crow-Armstrong, and Seiya Suzuki popped out in foul territory to first baseman Murakami. That brought Bregman to the plate, and his line drive to center field scored Kelly easily from second.
The Cubs had a strong outing from Gausman, who allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings while striking out five. Javier Assad followed with three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Caleb Thielbar contributed two-thirds of a scoreless inning before Webb closed it out for his sixth win.
The White Sox offense outhit the Cubs 10-8 but grounded into two double plays, including one that ended a potential threat in the first inning after Antonacci and Murakami had walked. Miguel Vargas grounded into a double play to erase the early baserunners, and Andrew Benintendi struck out to leave Antonacci stranded at third.
Colson Montgomery finished with three hits for the White Sox, including a double and a single in the eighth. Peters also had two hits and two RBI. Braden Montgomery struck out twice in four at-bats, and the White Sox were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring chances against the Cubs bullpen.
Crow-Armstrong added a single to go with his homer, and Busch had a solo shot among his three at-bats. Nico Hoerner also singled for the Cubs, while Pedro Ramírez and Ian Happ each had one hit. Kelly’s double in the ninth was his 12th of the season and set up the winning rally.
The Cubs improved to 74-53 with the win, while the White Sox slipped to 65-60. The teams will play the decisive game of this two-game series Wednesday night at Wrigley Field.
The White Sox had won four of their previous five games entering Tuesday, including a three-game sweep at Detroit over the weekend. The Cubs had dropped four of their previous five before winning the series opener Monday night in 10 innings.
