Gilbert, Wilson power Mariners to 1‑0 win over Yankees
NEW YORK (Interstat) — Weston Wilson hit a solo home run in the second inning, Logan Gilbert pitched six scoreless innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Yankees 1-0 on Thursday.
Wilson’s home run, his fourth of the season, came on a fly ball to left-center field off Max Fried. It gave Seattle its only run of the game and enough support for a pitching staff that combined on a four-hit shutout. Gilbert, the winning pitcher, improved to 9-7. He allowed four hits and struck out seven over six innings, walking no one. Fried, the loser, dropped to 4-4 after allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings.
Seattle (57-65) had five hits but grounded into two double plays and managed little else beyond Wilson’s blast. The Mariners put runners on base in the third, fourth and fifth innings but could not push across an insurance run. In the third, Randy Arozarena singled and Julio Rodríguez singled to put two on with one out, but Dominic Canzone struck out and Cal Raleigh popped out. In the fourth, Josh Naylor singled but Brendan Donovan grounded into a double play. In the fifth, Jhonny Pereda singled but Leo Rivas grounded into another double play.
The Yankees (68-53) had their best scoring chance in the third inning. Ali Sánchez singled, and Trent Grisham followed with a line-drive single to right. Grisham tried to advance to second on the play, but right fielder Dominic Canzone threw to shortstop Leo Rivas, and the tag was applied. The call was overturned on replay, and Grisham was out, with Sánchez moving to third. Ben Rice then grounded out to end the inning.
New York also threatened in the seventh. José Caballero and Ryan McMahon drew consecutive walks with one out, but José A. Ferrer, who had entered in relief, got Amed Rosario to strike out looking after a replay review confirmed the call. Ferrer pitched a scoreless inning. Eduard Bazardo followed with a scoreless eighth, and Andrés Muñoz struck out the side in the ninth for his 21st save.
Gilbert was effective from the start, retiring the first two batters in the first inning on a sharp lineout and a strikeout. The Yankees got a double from Luis García Jr. in the second, but Gilbert stranded him. He allowed a single in the third and another in the fourth but worked around the hits with strikeouts and weak contact. Spencer Jones struck out twice against Gilbert, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. also struck out twice.
The game was played at Yankee Stadium in front of 41,842 fans. The time of game was 2:47.
Seattle had lost the first two games of the series, falling 10-5 on Wednesday and 4-1 on Tuesday. The win Thursday allowed the Mariners to avoid a three-game sweep. New York had won four of its previous five games.
For the Yankees, Luis García Jr. went 2 for 4 with a double. The rest of the lineup managed only two singles and combined for seven strikeouts. The Yankees stranded runners in scoring position in the third and seventh innings and never got a runner past second base after the third.
Seattle’s bullpen combination of Ferrer, Bazardo and Muñoz faced the minimum in the final three innings. Muñoz, after striking out Luis García Jr. to open the ninth, struck out George Lombard Jr. and Jazz Chisholm Jr. to end the game. The save was Muñoz’s 21st of the season.
The Mariners had a chance to extend their lead in the seventh when Wilson walked, but Jhonny Pereda struck out and Cole Young grounded out. In the ninth, Cal Raleigh struck out, Josh Naylor grounded out and Brendan Donovan popped out to end the game.
Yankees relievers Ryan Yarbrough, Yerry De los Santos and Fernando Cruz combined for four scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out six. De los Santos pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out three. Yarbrough pitched 1 1/3 innings and struck out two, and Cruz struck out one in a perfect inning.
