Houston Astros at San Diego Padres
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Houston Astros and San Diego Padres meet Sunday at PETCO Park with matching 60-57 records and a chance to grab sole momentum in the three-game series.
Houston took the opener Friday 6-3 behind Cam Smith, who went 3 for 4 with two home runs and two RBIs. San Diego bounced back Saturday with a 3-1 win. With the series tied 1-1, Sunday’s rubber game will leave the winner at 61-57 and the loser at 60-58.
The forecast calls for clear skies with a game-time temperature of 81 degrees.
Smith has been the Astros’ most consistent hitter. Over his past six games, the right fielder is 12 for 25 with two homers. He also drove in a run in Houston’s 7-2 win over Toronto on Aug. 4 and had three hits Aug. 2 against Texas. His two-homer performance Friday announced him as a primary threat to San Diego pitching.
The Padres will counter with Fernando Tatis Jr., who homered in Friday’s loss and has been streaky over the past week. He went 5 for 5 with two RBIs against Colorado on July 28 and homered Aug. 5 at Arizona, but he is 8 for 25 over his past six games. Still, Tatis remains San Diego’s most dynamic offensive player, capable of changing the game with one swing.
Both teams enter with identical records and similar inconsistency. Houston has won five of its last seven. San Diego has split its past six. Interstat’s game simulator projects a tight game, with the Padres winning 7-6.
After Sunday, Houston travels to San Francisco for a three-game series, while San Diego opens a homestand Monday against Milwaukee. First, the Astros and Padres must settle the weekend in a matchup that could provide an early September wild-card preview.
